Spaza shops are more than just convenience stores — they are the heartbeat of many small towns, townships, and rural communities.

Yet, South African-owned Spaza Shops in these areas face challenges that often keep them from growing into sustainable businesses. Many operate with limited business acumen, struggle to access stock at affordable prices, and face stiff competition — not only from large retailers but also from foreign-owned Spaza operators who often have stronger networks and supply chains.

It’s important to recognize that these local entrepreneurs are not competing on a level playing field. Their conditions are very different from those in bigger townships, where higher volumes and better access to suppliers create different dynamics.

If we are serious about empowering communities, then supporting these Spaza Shop owners is critical. What they need is a collaborative effort — partnerships that bring together business, government, and community stakeholders to provide training, affordable supply access, and long-term growth opportunities.
