๐Ÿฆ’ WHOโ€™S WHO WEDNESDAYS

Meet our keynote speaker: Dr Liza Dadone

The International Giraffe Symposium 2026 is honoured to welcome Dr Liza Dadone, an internationally renowned zoo and wildlife veterinarian whose career has been dedicated to advancing giraffe medicine, conservation health, and evidence-based wildlife management.

With more than two decades of experience in clinical veterinary medicine, research, conservation programmes, and international training, Dr Dadone is widely recognised as one of the worldโ€™s leading experts in giraffe health and veterinary care.

As the Founder and Principal Consultant of Giraffe Veterinary Services and Head Veterinarian for Save Giraffes Now, she leads initiatives aimed at improving giraffe welfare, reducing mortality, and integrating veterinary science into global conservation strategies. Her work spans both managed and free-ranging giraffe populations and supports conservation programmes across Africa and internationally.

Dr Dadoneโ€™s specialist expertise includes:

๐Ÿฉบ Giraffe immobilisation and anaesthesia
๐Ÿฆถ Lameness, foot health, and distal limb disease
๐Ÿ”ฌ Mortality investigations and disease management
๐Ÿผ Reproductive and neonatal care
๐Ÿšš Transport and translocation risk mitigation
๐ŸŒ Conservation health and population management

Her extensive field experience includes conservation and translocation projects in Uganda, Kenya, Niger, Botswana, Ecuador, and Colombia. Through these initiatives, she has collaborated with governments, NGOs, veterinarians, and wildlife professionals to strengthen health monitoring and improve population-management outcomes.

An accomplished educator and international trainer, Dr Dadone regularly presents veterinary courses and workshops on giraffe medicine, anaesthesia, emergency response, immobilisation, and hoofstock management. She also serves as a Veterinary Advisor to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Giraffe Programs and is a member of the IUCN SSC Giraffe & Okapi Specialist Group.

Her scientific contributions include influential publications on giraffe pathology, lameness, mortality, anaesthesia, and conservation medicine, as well as contributions to Fowlerโ€™s Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine.

We look forward to welcoming Dr Dadone to the International Giraffe Symposium 2026, where she will share her exceptional knowledge of giraffe veterinary medicine, conservation health, and welfare-centred management.

๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿ”ฌ What have we learned during ?

Over the past several weeks, weโ€™ve taken a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible science of assisted reproduction in giraffes. Together, weโ€™ve explored how researchers are developing new tools to help conserve one of the worldโ€™s most iconic species.

Weโ€™ve learned how:
๐Ÿงฌ Semen is collected, evaluated, and cryopreserved to preserve valuable genetics for the future.

๐Ÿฅš Oocytes (egg cells) are collected, matured, and vitrified, protecting the genetic contribution of female giraffes.

๐Ÿงซ In vitro fertilization (IVF) allows s***m and egg cells to come together in the laboratory to create healthy giraffe embryos.

โ„๏ธ These embryos can be cryopreserved, preserving their genetic potential until the time is right.

๐Ÿคฑ One day, embryo transfer may allow those embryos to be carried by carefully selected surrogate females, helping produce healthy calves without moving animals across continents.

Each of these technologies is powerful on its own. Together, they form a toolkit that allows scientists to preserve genetics, increase genetic diversity, and connect fragmented giraffe populations through a true One Population Conservationapproach.

This isnโ€™t just about creating embryos or freezing cells.

Itโ€™s about ensuring that the genetics of todayโ€™s giraffes remain available to support healthy populations for generations to come.

Conservation isnโ€™t only about protecting the giraffes we see today...

Itโ€™s about preserving the future of the species.

Thank you for following our series and for supporting the science that is helping shape the future of giraffe conservation. There is still much to discover, and weโ€™re excited to continue sharing that journey with you.
