Kovsie Brewing is an initiative that was started by post graduate students at the department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology at the University of the Free State in 2012. Over the last five years the small scale experimental brewery has steadily grown to the point where we obtained institutional support to establish the first UFS campus-based micro-brewery. ie Brewing is therefore to establish accredited fermentation based curriculum at the University of the Free State to educate under- and postgraduate students in the scientific process involved in the production of beer as well as fermentation. The secondly role is for Kovsie brewing to function as multi-disciplinary platform to stimulate the interaction between students from various fields of study. At this stage we have well established cooperative projects with both Marketing- and Entrepreneurship programs. Lastly, to promote responsible beer culture on the campus of the University of the Free State as well as greater Bloemfontein area. Currently the craft beer industry in Bloemfontein is in its infancy, educating the public through craft beer is the best strategy to increase positive beer culture.
