The next phase of getting our new crops ready is underway!

We’re creating separate growing camps under the protective nets, adding compost to give the soil a healthy boost and now laying drip irrigation pipes ready for our new vegetables. 🫑🥕🥬

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes before a vegetable ever makes it into a box ~ and we’re getting closer every week.

All of this preparation is part of our plan for the new Radysakkertjie vegetable boxes, with the first deliveries targeted for later this year. 🌟

Follow along as we build, plant and grow.

Did you know that drip irrigation can help save water, by providing it directly to the plant that needs it? 🌱💧

We use a drip irrigation system to deliver water slowly and directly to the roots of our plants, one plant at a time.

Instead of watering large areas of soil, the system helps us:
💧 Use water more efficiently🌱 Deliver moisture directly where plants need it🚿 Reduce unnecessary water loss🌿 Give plants a more consistent supply of water

Our irrigation system is connected to the farm dam, with a specialised pump that also allows nutrients to be mixed into the water before irrigation. For us, farming sustainably isn't about one big solution. It's about making smarter choices, one improvement at a time.

Not everything happening on the farm is about planting and harvesting. 😉

The team has been busy with farm maintenance and improvements, including working on a new kraal for our sheep. 🐑

A farm is a living, working place and keeping it safe, practical and well maintained; is just as important as preparing the fields.

From the soil beneath our crops to the spaces that look after our animals, there's always something happening at Radysakkertjie.

Did you know? Soil needs a little turning before it can really get growing.

Before planting, the soil at Radysakkertjie is rotivated - a process of loosening and mixing the top layer of soil using a rotary tiller.

Why do it?
🌱 It helps break up compacted soil💧 Improves water penetration🌿 Helps mix organic matter and nutrients through the soil🌾 Creates a more suitable seedbed for planting🥕 Gives young roots room to establish and grow

It's one of those jobs that doesn't look particularly exciting… but good crops start with good soil.

At Radysakkertjie, we're learning that farming really does begin from the ground up. 🌱

Today marks five years since we said goodbye to Oom Len.

Radysakkertjie was his dream. A dream that started with a piece of land, a love for farming and a vision for what this little farm could become.

Five years later, that dream is still growing. There have been challenges, lessons, long distances, hard work and plenty of learning along the way. But what started as Oom Len’s dream has become a journey, one that continues to grow from the soil he loved.

Today, in his honour, we are proud to launch the Radysakkertjie website: 🌱 https://radysakkertjie.co.za/ 🌱

It tells the story of where we started, where we are today and where we hope to go. We would like to think that Oom Len would be proud of how far we've come since he left us.

We've been quiet… but we haven't been still. 🌱❄️

The last time we posted, we were planting seedlings and watching the Radysakkertjie journey take root. Since then, winter has settled over the Free State, while we've been busy behind the scenes preparing, planning and getting ready for the next season. Farming teaches patience. Growth isn't always visible.

A new season is coming, and this time we're taking you along.

We have a few crops in ‘production.’ 🌱 From seed, to seedling, and then replanting our baby plants into the soil - we have life! 🙌🏼

Here’s a sneak peek of what’s been happening behind the scenes…

How to keep a legend’s dream alive? We build on the foundation of his ambitions. 🌾

Dad was known for one story in particular ~ Radysakkertjie. A hilarious, satirical twist on the Garden of Eden. Since he’s not physically here to share the story and his jokes anymore, we’re letting the farm do the talking.

Each camp has its own story to tell:
🍃 Adam
🍃 Eva
🍃 Jimperiki (The forbidden fruit)
🍃 Putu Pap en Heuning

His humor built this place. Now, it lives in every corner of it. We love and miss you, Oom Len. Thanks for the endless laughs and memories. 🕊️
