This morning we attended to the sheep and then we did some more fruit tree planting. Thank you Big Tree Growers Wholesale Nursery for your always strong and healthy trees.
We also prepped for another Kei-apple windbreak to be planted and transplanted a big shrub from last year to be able to survive this coming hot summer.

All the wood we collected in the field over the past two weekends got burned today. Now I have charcoal again for my new asparagus rows.

Did you know that within City of Cape Town you need a burn permit for open fires. You cannot just burn when you feel like it. There are many rules as well as costs involved. May to October is our burning season. You have to keep the weather in mind according to the rules and not only for the day but for a few days thereafter too. You also cannot burn over weekends and public holidays.

Dinner tonight. Our first asparagus harvest will go to the pan for some blanching. Then some greens for salad. Greens are chinese cabbage, peas, rocket, chives and oreganum. We’ll be adding store bought tomatoes and avocado plus homemade feta.

I added four more rows of asparagus today. 80 new plants. Almost thought I would do row four tomorrow, but then decided to push through and finish today. I will probably sleep well again tonight. 😀
Cleaning up all the pots can wait until tomorrow. That is normally the worst part of the job.

We were picking up wood again today. Clearing the land block by block.
One thing that doesn’t last on this property is clothes. Look at the piece of wood in the picture, what face do you see?

We are busy mulching all our trees. They say El Nĩno is going to be harsh on us this next year. Hopefully no 51°C again this summer.
The sheep feels like too much work for me, but I am grateful for their waste.

We have a new batch of Egyptian Geese. Two pairs were breeding by us this year. They grow up very quickly.

The past few weeks we’ve had many frosty mornings. This is something we don’t get too often in our area. Unfortunately the asparagus don’t like frost and when they emerge during the frost the top of the spear is curved and sometimes completely damaged.
Maybe our cherry tree will like this cold and thrive.

The onion beds were overgrown with winter weeds. The job is done and now it looks clean again.
