The joys of not having solar power is that you have power outages on a regular basis. This was the second attempt to steal our cable here at the new smallholding. Unfortunately we don’t have much control over our Eskom pole as it is located on our neighbors farm. The first attempt was stopped by our neighbors, but this time they got it right at 1am yesterday.
Hubby had to go to work so I went to the police to file a case. They didn’t call it stealing, but damage of property. 🤦‍♀️ 8m of cable was gone.
This was on our side of the box so don’t know who was supposed to repair, but Eskom would’ve taken two plus weeks to come out.

Luckily I have a very handy and knowledgeable husband plus a high voltage electrician father-in-law that was able to repair the cable after work. My dad helped to dig a trench for the cable. Our son came after work and helped bring cement blocks and concrete to secure. A family team. Our electricity was back on within a day. Needless to say this cable was now so secured I don’t think anyone will bother again to steal it. Way too difficult. 🤣

This morning at 3am the electricity went off again and I thought this can’t be real, but then it turned out to be an area fault and was on again by 6am.

Cable theft is very real in our area and we rely so much on Eskom. We hope to make a move to solar some day.

Yesterday I sprayed my fruit trees with Agri-Boost TM and was blown away by how many ladybugs I saw.
I then thought again how I learned about the Asian lady beetle that looks like a ladybug but it’s not. The lady beetle has a M-shape on the head and they are not good bugs.
Do a little research and check your gardens if you can spot the difference.

Today we tackled the bales of sheep wool in this scorching heat. It is a privilege to have a student on holiday. Our daughter was able to help me pack the wool around the fruit trees. It would’ve taken so much longer without her help and at one stage I almost passed out. That is something that doesn’t normally happen to me. With some celtic salt, lots of Coke and a little lunch I was able to carry on again.

Today I sprayed the fruit trees with Agri-Boost and while doing that I realized how many fruit are already on the trees. These trees were all planted last year and were at fruit bearing stage. Last year I really tried to take good care of them after they were planted and I also came across the Agriboost product. Somehow I got the calculations wrong and gave them 10x more than suggested and only realized it towards winter. Luckily it can’t damage the trees if overdosed and might’ve been the reason why they are so happy now. So we hope that we don’t have any unforeseen damage and get to harvest lots of organic fruit this season. Apples, pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, quinces, plums, lemons, lime, oranges, naartjies, kumquats, grapefruit, pomegranates, grenadillas, figs, tree tomatoes, dragon fruit, olives.

The Elsenburg sheep shearing team and another professional were in the area yesterday to shear a few smallholdings’ sheep. In total they sheared 124 sheep, half of it were ours and our daughter sheared 15 sheep. They started around 08:00 and finished after 15:00. Painful bodies and blistered fingers but the job is done and the sheep are ready for the summer heat.
My husband was the one catching the sheep in the pen to hand over to the shearer. So he was quite tired too after spending the morning cleaning the area for the shearers and mowing grass.
Shearing is one job that I admire. Working very hard for little money.
We now have two big bales of wool. Guess what I’ll be doing this week? Fruit tree covering.
