Cinsault on a Monday? YES PLEASE. (Can you tell we are quite giddy over this one)
Introducing Eight Gates Cinsault 2018
Carlo and Kolja first crossed paths at school in Cape Town in 1989. Sharing a common perspective on life, their respective journeys led them to various countries across the globe, where they absorbed knowledge and expanded their horizons. Carlo delved into carpentry in Switzerland before pursuing a winemaking degree from Stellenbosch, while Kolja initially ventured into garden landscaping in Germany before transitioning into finance.
Their mutual love for fine wines was a cornerstone of their friendship. They relished the idea of collaborating with individuals who shared their passion for exploration and connection. Along their journey, they pondered over several names, including Klein Begin, Dwarswind, and Kronkelpad, reflecting the twists and turns of their paths. Eventually, inspiration struck when a friend introduced them to a book titled “The Second Half of Life: Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom.” The name Eight Gates resonated deeply with them, symbolizing their own winding journey and the wisdom gained along the way.
The Cinsaut comes from a small bushvine vineyard in the Breedekloof region, planted in 1997. Wholebunch fermentation in one open-top tank, and maturation in one new 500l barrel (from the Mittelberger cooperage - IYKYK) and a 3rd fill neutral barrel for 18 months followed. It’s a 2018 vintage and in a beautiful drinking stage right now.
Also look out for the Chenin Blanc made from Tulbagh grapes and showing refined elegance.
