In July 2000 Samantha Skyring (CEO) walked 120km over 7 days through the Namib Desert from Hartman’s Valley along the Kunene River to reach the Skeleton Coast. She had several powerful and incredible face to face encounters with Oryx gazella (gemsbok), which became the inspiration for the Oryx Desert Salt brand. hout water, but no more than two months without licking salt – the salt vital for its survival in the harsh conditions of the Kalahari Desert. Oryx Desert Salt is harvested from a salt pan within the remote pristine Kalahari Desert. Beneath the pan lies an ancient undergournd brine lake. The salt water is drawn up onto the pan and sun-dried in a process that lives in harmony with the natural rainfall and surrounding environment. Oryx Desert Salt is unrefined, free from any additives and chemicals and still containing all the essential minerals and trace elements that exist naturally in salt, as nature intended, so they can be utilised and absorbed for optimal vitality and health. The Oryx Desert Salt source isn’t a finite rock salt deposit or an ancient sea bed that we mine away until it’s gone.

Oryx comes from a 55 million ton underground salt lake deep beneath the Kalahari Desert.

And what makes it especially remarkable is how it is continually renewed.

Three underground rivers flow into the lake. These rivers are fed by rainfall that slowly filters down through layer upon layer of earth, eventually reaching the river that runs through ancient rock strata of up to 350 million years old.

As the water travels through this ancient geology, it naturally becomes salinated (salty), picking up minerals and trace elements before flowing into the underground lake.

The rivers keep flowing. Rainfall keeps filtering through the earth. And the salt lake continues to be naturally replenished.
