Some of the most interesting things at the market are often hiding in plain sight.

Produce that many people walk past without a second glance. Not because they aren’t special, but because they are unfamiliar.

This is the beginning of a new series with Sheryl, where we take a closer look at some of the market’s lesser-known fruits and vegetables, the varieties with unusual names, rich histories, and remarkable flavours.

Every fruit and vegetable at the market comes from farms within roughly three hours of Cape Town. More than 250 varieties, grown by farmers who understand the seasons, the soil, and the land they work with every day.

Many of these varieties are grown on a small scale. They require knowledge, care, and a willingness from farmers to keep planting crops that are not always the most familiar.

When we choose local produce, especially the lesser-known varieties, we help create demand for diversity in our food system.

And diversity matters.

It protects varieties that might otherwise disappear from our tables altogether 🍆🥕🌿

This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating the dads, grandads, stepdads, father figures, mentors and quiet supporters who shape our lives in ways both big and small.

Join us at the market this Sunday, where you’ll find a tree of messages dedicated to the father figures in our community 🌳✍️✨

Take a moment to write a note, share a memory, or simply say thank you.

There will also be a place to take a photo together, a few familiar songs drifting through the market, and all the things that make a Sunday morning feel well spent.

Some businesses begin with a gap in the market.

Others begin with a longing for home.

When Jessica moved from Taiwan to South Africa, there were certain flavours she simply couldn’t find. The snacks and treats she had grown up with. The foods that carried memories of childhood, family and familiarity.

So she started making them herself.

What began in her own kitchen slowly grew into MiFei, a business inspired not only by the food she missed, but also by her children, who encouraged her to share these flavours with others.

Today, her stall brings a small taste of Asia to the market.

Handmade mochi in flavours like coconut, strawberry and matcha. Warm obanyaki filled with custard and other seasonal fillings. Treats shaped by memory, tradition and careful craftsmanship.

It’s a reminder that food is often more than food.

Sometimes it’s a connection to where we’ve come from. And sometimes it’s a way of sharing that story with others.

Winter Tomatoes Have Arrived 🍅

While storms swept across the Cape, thousands of tomato plants were ripening slowly under protection in the greenhouses of LOT 187 near Wilderness in the Garden Route.

Planted in the heat of late autumn and carried through the cooler days of winter, these tomatoes have been given time to develop real flavour, colour and character.

Grown here in the Western Cape, rather than transported over long distances, they bring fresh, local brightness to the market long after the traditional tomato season has ended.

Because winter deserves good tomatoes too.

Pistachio Fest 2026 is a celebration of those growers, the farm workers who care for the trees season after season, and the extraordinary creativity of the Oranjezicht Market community.
