At Kilifi Creek, we’ve spent years refining the art of raising kids.
Through implementing meticulous protocol, our milk-barn has become an integral part of the production cycle in its own merit—smoothing out milk shortage problems and streamlining our the transition to the next step of the production cycle.

We’ve seen a massive boost in getting to an optimal and equal weaning weight in general, and far more consistency across the herd. By eliminating runts in the next step of the cycle, we minimize bullying and ensure every animal has an equal opportunity to thrive.

In 2025 we have expanded so much that we built a standalone milking facility for the nursemaids’ contribution.

What began as a support system for struggling kids has evolved into a fully specialized production system that stands entirely on its own merit.

These disciplined practices are exactly why we lead the way in the Kalahari Red industry. If you are ready to elevate your own operation with the Kilifi Creek advantage, WhatsApp us today to discover our current offerings and secure your next generation of top-tier genetics.

Selecting the right animal on a busy farm can be overwhelming, and it's easy to lose sight of your long-term goals in the heat of the moment. Without a clear way to weigh your options, you're often left wondering if a seller's claims truly match the reality of their operation.

That is why Kilifi Creek is a proud member of the South African Stud Book Association. Managing a premier breeding endeavor requires more than just intuition; it demands the ability to track every animal’s history to ensure continued improvement. When you buy a goat backed by Stud Book, you aren't just taking our word for it—you are gaining access to verified pedigrees, audited performance data, and the certainty of a traceable bloodline.

This commitment to data and transparency gives us the very best selection and offers you an elite standard of excellence. In fact, in 2023, SA Stud Book honored Kilifi Creek with a Silver Elite Award, which serves as independent proof of our credibility and the quality of the animals we provide.

Another pitfall you might not consider when buying a goat based on its looks is that you are potentially buying additional “problems” with your “pretty goat”.
Even with a good pedigree, you can acquire serious headaches when purchasing animals from a disease-ridden farm.
Once you bring those “pests” onto your farm, it can take years, if it is not permanent, to get rid of them, and can cost you dearly in medication and fatalities.

It is therefore prudent to know where your animals come from.
Go see the health status of the general herd and farm you are buying from.
Do not be afraid to ask questions regarding their health and pick up tips while you are at it, about maintaining a clean farm.

A reputable farmer will want to see you succeed, too.

It is common practice in the goat-world where a price is negotiated purely based on looks. Unfortunately, you will “pay the price” somewhere else when this is how you select your animals solely. A healthy production and reproduction functionality is the baseline of any profitable and viable stud.

To have a commercial value in your herd, you will need to do a strict selection regarding the animals that you acquire by choosing fertility, mothering abilities, your ram’s ability to mate, and growth in your kids.

To get these results, it is advisable that you go see the stud you are buying from. Is it a functioning farm?
How do the animals look overall?
How are the mothers around their kids?
Ask questions regarding turnaround time, fertility, and multiple births, and acquire the proof thereof.
A farming endeavor that runs on “looks” alone will never be viable.

Buying from a bigger pool of excellence

When buying goats, you might be tempted to select solely the best visual quality that is on offer in the group, but that might be a mistake, where you gamble with the outcome of what that goat will contribute to your herd.

Firstly, you will not know how strong those “good genes” are. Is this goat’s good looks just a fluke from a generally poorer-looking herd? Is the person selling them telling you a lot of what you want to hear instead of what the reality is? Out of what type of herd does he come from? What do his sisters, brothers, and mother look like?

Your breeding animals will breed back to the average of the herd they were bred from. It is therefore just as important to know their background, how their brothers and sisters look, as their own features. And that is also why we only select and breed with the top 10% of Kilifi Creek production.

If you do not apply this rule to your own production, you will not reach excellence. And if you buy animals without making sure this rule is applied to the herd they come out of, you are gambling with your own herd production!

In a professional stud, data is the heartbeat of genetic progress; without precise records, you are merely multiplying animals rather than refining a legacy.

True farming efficiency is impossible without the ability to track growth rates, fertility, and lineage, as you cannot manage what you do not measure.

Integrating RFID technology at birth allows breeders to capture this critical performance data instantly, which is later digitally tethered to a formal SA Stud Book number like PREFIX 26-001.

This seamless link between the electronic chip and the official registry ensures every management decision is backed by a foolproof data trail, turning raw information into a competitive advantage.

These disciplined practices are exactly why we lead the way in the Kalahari Red industry.

Clustering is a powerful tool, but it’s only half the battle.

To truly master herd management, you need meticulous record-keeping.
Once the kids move to the larger camps with their mothers, the risk of mix-ups increases significantly.

That’s why our tracking starts on day one.

From the moment of birth, every kid is weighed, tagged, and linked to its mother’s profile.

From that point on, every milestone, every vaccination, and every gram of growth is recorded.

Every decision that is made in the future will be made with these records in mind.

Record keeping plays a critical role in proper herd management.

By operating with strict, methodical protocols—including strategic camp rotation, high-density clustering, and precision record-keeping—we specialise in the holistic identification and enhancement of elite genetics.

These disciplined practices are exactly why we lead the way in the Kalahari Red industry. If you are ready to elevate your own operation with the Kilifi Creek advantage, WhatsApp us today to discover our current offerings and secure your next generation of top-tier genetics.

As demonstrated in the kidding-phase videos we covered, there are many advantages to managing large herds in clusters, taking into account each stage of the cycle and when it occurs. Food availability, weather, and parasite loads are a few factors to consider when planning how the cycle from birthing, weaning, or mating will play out.

It is therefore important to understand each part of the cycle and what is needed for that production stage in detail, so you can cater to their specific needs at each phase. It is for this reason that we separate our animals into various groups, and why clustering plays an important role.

The does, and their kids, remain in the kidding pens for anywhere between 3 and 14 days, depending on any issues that may arise.

Once it is established that both doe and kids are healthy and strong, they are moved into an open, yet fairly small, camp designed specifically for newborns. Each of these camps is equipped with a roof, providing shelter from rain, and contains creep-feeding pens where the kids can begin learning to eat independently without interference from the does.

By carefully managing this transition and providing a safe, structured environment for early growth, we ensure that all animals develop optimally and harmoniously. It is this structured attention to detail and commitment to proper care that exemplifies and sustains excellence in our herd management practices.

The kidding barn not only facilitates close monitoring of does and their kids but also plays a vital role in preventing and controlling diseases during this critical stage.
Our barn is a quarantined environment, with access restricted to healthy new mothers and their designated staff.
Cement floors and painted walls make cleaning easier and more effective, supporting a hygienic environment.

Immediately after birth, all excretions are removed to maintain a clean and dry space, reducing the risk of flies and disease.
In cases where specific diseases, such as orf, are present on the farm, it becomes even more critical to section off areas like this to contain and eventually eliminate infection.
Organizing work in clusters and cycles, and moving large groups of animals together, further helps maintain control and hygiene.

By prioritizing cleanliness and careful management at every step, we not only protect the health of our animals but also set the standard for operational excellence.
It is through this commitment to hygiene and attention to detail that true excellence in kidding management is achieved.
