Happy International Chardonnay Day from Elgin.

At Elgin Vintners, Chardonnay has become one of the defining wines of the range — shaped by Elgin’s cool climate, natural acidity and slower ripening conditions.

As winemaker Gus Dale explains:

“We’ve managed to convert quite a lot of those people back to Chardonnay with this beautiful, cool climate version of South African Chardonnay.”

The soon-to-be released 2025 vintage is naturally fermented in French oak barrels using indigenous yeasts, with extended lees ageing adding texture and depth while retaining freshness and precision.

Bone dry, bright and layered, it’s a style that continues to gain traction both internationally and here at home — proof that Elgin Chardonnay continues to speak for itself.

The past week has brought real havoc to the farm — uprooted trees, broken branches and gale-force winds causing significant damage across the valley.

But between the storms, there are moments when the weather clears and the farm returns to what makes this place so special: crisp air, open landscapes and a sense of calm that feels far removed from the city.

We are open and looking forward to welcoming guests again for wine tastings, pizzas and country stays.

To book your getaway, contact our team on WhatsApp at 072 548 2462.

Ps: please note that the current tasting room is temporarily closed but tastings can still be organised.

Post-harvest in the vineyards doesn’t mean the work stops.

At Elgin Vintners, the focus now shifts to soil health and how the vineyards are managed through winter. As Gus Dale explains, the farm follows a no-tilling approach between the vineyard rows, allowing natural cover to grow rather than repeatedly ploughing the soils.

“Natural weeds are definitely better than ploughing the rows clean,” he explains. Repeated tilling can further compact wet soils, while natural cover helps protect and stabilise them through the colder, wetter months.

While dedicated cover crops can bring additional benefits such as nitrogen retention and attracting beneficial insects, maintaining natural cover is still considered a more sustainable long-term practice than heavily disturbing the soil each year.

In a region like Elgin, where rainfall and soil structure play such an important role, these decisions continue long after harvest is over.

You might come for the wine, but if you’re quiet enough, you may be one of the few to encounter one of Elgin’s quieter residents.

The Cape grysbok moves almost unnoticed along the edges of the vineyards and orchards, most often at dawn or late afternoon, when the farm is at its stillest.

A few things to look out for:
– It’s a solitary antelope, rarely seen in groups
– Perfectly adapted to fynbos and orchard landscapes
– Mostly active when the day begins or fades
– Males carry short, straight horns — females do not

It’s part of what makes time here feel a little different.

A new release — and a new standard for how we bottle it.

Today, on Sauvignon Blanc Day, we introduce the Ridgelands range.

Named after the farm where Elgin Vintners is based, Ridgelands is not a permanent line. It will only appear in vintages where a specific parcel stands apart — in balance, ripeness and structure — and warrants separate treatment.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is the first. A small portion was selected and fermented in older French oak, rather than stainless steel, to build texture while retaining clarity. Fewer than 950 bottles were produced.

“As with vintage Champagne or Port, this is not something we will do every year. Only when the quality is there — and when a parcel justifies standing on its own.” — Gus Dale

Some mornings make it easier to understand the place.

The vineyards may be post-harvest, but conditions like this are part of what shaped the season — not constant, not guaranteed, but influential when they arrive at the right time.

Cloud Haven takes its name from that.
A nod to the mist that moves through the valley and, in certain moments, leaves its mark on the wine.
