We have good reason to be proud of our team at Elgin Vintners.

Marisa Kleinhans placed among the six highest-scoring candidates in Elgin following the Sommeliers Academy’s W**e Advisor training. Having earned her W**e Advisor Certificate, she will now progress to the online W**e Ambassador course, developing her expertise in w**e service, guest communication and food pairing.

Working across our guest house and tasting room, Marisa plays an important part in how visitors experience Elgin Vintners. Welcoming overnight guests and guiding visitors through our w**es require knowledge, care and an understanding of what each person needs. Her achievement recognises the commitment she brings to that work.

We also celebrate Megan Petersen, who earned her W**e Advisor Certificate, and Clifford Moyo, who joined them in the training. The course explored how climate, grape varieties and w**emaking shape the w**es we serve, alongside practical tasting and hospitality skills.

Congratulations, Marisa, on an excellent result, and thank you to all three for investing in your knowledge and the welcome we offer our guests.

Our garden opens to visitors this spring for Elgin Open Gardens, and we’d love to welcome you.

VINEYARD UPDATE | WITH GUS

There’s been a lot of activity in our Chardonnay blocks over the past few weeks.

A prolonged warm and dry end to winter resulted in slightly earlier budding this year, and three to four weeks after budburst, we’re already seeing significant canopy growth. The recent cooler weather and rainfall have therefore been very welcome, helping to slow things down and bring the vines back into a more balanced growth pattern.

Now the work moves inside the canopy.

We’re removing unwanted shoots and keeping the growth where we want it, as close to the cordon as possible. Look closely and you can already see the inflorescences developing on the young shoots — these will flower and, ultimately, become our Chardonnay bunches.

Flowering should begin in around three weeks. And an interesting fact from Gus: grapevines are one of the rare plants that don’t require bees for fertilisation.

A lot happens between budburst and a bunch of grapes. Gus takes us into the vines to show you exactly what’s happening now.

Our Heritage W**e Walk/Run was a complete success!

We love welcoming visitors to the farm, and yesterday was a wonderful way to experience Elgin Vintners a little differently — walking and running through the vineyards, stopping to taste our w**es along the route, and enjoying the farm together.

Good w**e, beautiful vineyard views and plenty of good company — exactly how we wanted to celebrate Heritage Day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day such a success. We loved having you here and hope to see you back on the farm very soon.

And judging by the response, we may just have to do it again…

A finalist at the 2026 ontbytSAKE Awards.

Last night, our MD and w**emaker Gus Dale represented Elgin Vintners at the ontbytSAKE Toekennings at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria.

Elgin Vintners was selected as a finalist in the Best Studio Interview category, following Gus’s appearance on ontbytSAKE earlier this year.

We may not have brought the award home to Elgin this time, but we’re very pleased to see the conversations around our vineyards, w**es and the Elgin Valley recognised on a national platform.

Congratulations to the winners and to all the 2026 finalists — and thank you to ontbytSAKE for a memorable evening.

The Elgin Vintners W**e Fun Run is back.

Join us on 24 September for a 5km run or walk through the vineyards, with a different Elgin Vintners w**e waiting at every kilometre:

4km – Elgin Vintners Merlot 2020, offering the opportunity to see how the w**e has developed with additional bottle age.

Tim Atkin’s 2026 South Africa Special Report confirms the country’s continued quality progression, with Elgin firmly among the regions helping to drive it forward.

Atkin identifies Elgin as a leading South African site for Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Elgin Vintners is proud to be included in his Cape Classification, while our Chardonnay 2025 and Ridgelands Sauvignon Blanc 2023 both received 92 points.

Of the Chardonnay, he writes: “Demonstrating his experience with Chardonnay, first developed in Beaune, Gus Dale ferments this w**e with natural yeasts.”

Meaningful recognition for Elgin, our vineyards and the work taking place in our cellar.
