Tim Atkin’s 2026 South Africa Special Report confirms the country’s continued quality progression, with Elgin firmly among the regions helping to drive it forward.

Atkin identifies Elgin as a leading South African site for Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Elgin Vintners is proud to be included in his Cape Classification, while our Chardonnay 2025 and Ridgelands Sauvignon Blanc 2023 both received 92 points.

Of the Chardonnay, he writes: “Demonstrating his experience with Chardonnay, first developed in Beaune, Gus Dale ferments this wine with natural yeasts.”

Meaningful recognition for Elgin, our vineyards and the work taking place in our cellar.

Spend any time in the vineyards with Gus Dale, MD and winemaker at Elgin Vintners, and pruning is never far from the conversation. It is one of his favourite subjects — because so much of the season ahead is influenced by decisions made while the vines are still dormant.

Now, with pruning complete and the vineyards ready for the first shoots, those decisions begin to show.

Chardonnay is particularly prone to early budding, which is why Gus believes timing is so important. By leaving the long canes on as late as possible and watching for the first buds at their extremities to push before making the final cut, the aim is to encourage more even sap distribution and, in turn, more uniform budbreak.

And uniformity at this stage matters. It influences what follows: flowering, berry set and ultimately how evenly the grapes mature.

For Gus, this is what makes pruning so interesting. It is not simply a winter job that is now finished. It is a series of decisions whose results will unfold in the vineyard over the months ahead.

Winter at Elgin Vintners has brought unusual weather, careful decisions in the vineyard and plenty of activity behind the scenes.

In our latest newsletter, Gus explains why we delayed pruning until August, how timing can influence budding, flowering and the season ahead, and why allowing the vines a longer dormancy is so important.

We also share news of a new Chardonnay vineyard being planted at Elgin Orchards, preparations for bottling the 2026 Elgin Vintners Sauvignon Blanc and Cloud Haven Pinot Noir, and our first unoaked Cloud Haven Chardonnay, due for release later this year.

There is also news from the Tasting Room, and an upcoming visit to Johannesburg.

MAKING ROOM FOR MORE CHARDONNAY

There is something particularly exciting about planting a new vineyard. What goes into the ground today is really a commitment to the wines we hope to make years from now.

Planting is currently underway at Elgin Orchards, where we are establishing a new block of Chardonnay with CY96 and CY95 clones. Chardonnay is our top-selling wine, and with demand continuing to grow, particularly in our export markets, increasing our plantings was a natural next step.

At the same time, there is another Chardonnay development in the cellar. We will soon bottle our first Cloud Haven Chardonnay — stainless-steel fermented and unoaked, offering a lighter, more accessible expression of Elgin Chardonnay.

So, while these CY96 and CY95 vines have a few years ahead of them before they give us their first grapes, Chardonnay is already writing the next chapter at Elgin Vintners.

Today is World Pinot Noir Day — a grape variety particularly at home in Elgin.

Our cool climate and long, slow growing season allow Pinot Noir to ripen gradually, retaining the natural acidity and freshness that are so important to the variety.

At Elgin Vintners, we explore Pinot Noir through two distinct expressions: the bright, approachable Cloud Haven Pinot Noir, and Elgin Vintners Pinot Noir, with greater depth, structure and complexity.

Two wines, two expressions of Pinot Noir, both grown in our own vineyards in Elgin.

A good reason to open a bottle today.

Happy World Pinot Noir Day.

For Elgin Vintners winemaker Gus Dale, understanding wine has always started in the vineyard.

His approach was shaped in Burgundy, where he studied viticulture and oenology and learnt by working hands-on in the vineyards, while learning French along the way.

Pruning is part of that understanding. Every cut influences budding, growth and fruit production — decisions made in winter that will ultimately influence the grapes arriving in the cellar months later.

Gus may not be part of the pruning team today, but he is rarely in the vineyards without his secateurs. If he spots a vine that needs a little TLC, he gets to work. That hands-on instinct has never left him.

For Gus, viticulture and winemaking have never been separate disciplines.

“Fine wine is made in the vineyards, not in the cellar.” — Gus Dale

Winter is when the vineyard speaks

Without leaves to hide them, the vines reveal the framework that has taken years to create.

These canes will soon be removed as winter pruning gets underway. The process is about far more than cutting back growth. It regulates the vine’s vigour, determines the number of shoots and bunches for the coming season, and plays a vital role in producing balanced, high-quality fruit.

The next time you visit Elgin in winter, take a closer look. Behind every vine lies years of craftsmanship and an understanding that great wines begin long before harvest.
