The winery forms part of larger holistic farming business called ‘De Rust Estate'. In addition to the vineyards and cellar, there are apple and pear orchards, a Hereford stud and eco-tourism activities, including amphitheatre concerts, on the farm. The estate forms part of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere. Half of the estate has been set aside for conservation into perpetuity.

Our w**es recently travelled across the world to London, where they were represented at the W**es of South Africa UK Trade Tasting alongside W**es of South Africa.

Our UK agent, Fells, represented Paul Clüver Family W**es on the ground, with Pippa Carter pouring our w**es and sharing the distinctive character of Elgin with members of the international w**e trade.

It was an opportunity to showcase our cool-climate w**es and the region that shapes their character to an international audience.

A lot happens in the cellar before a w**e ever reaches your glass.

For our w**emaking team, this is where close attention to the w**e becomes important. Fermentation, maturation, and regular checks all play a role in how the w**e develops, while the aim is to preserve the character and quality of the fruit from the vineyard.

There is no single step that makes the w**e. It is the decisions made throughout the process that bring everything together.

Ride The Cape is coming to Elgin.

From 20–22 November, Ride The Cape Elgin will take riders through orchards, vineyards, indigenous forests and mountain landscapes across the Elgin Valley.

This three-day cycling escape combines incredible riding with great food, local w**e and luxury glamping at Cherry Glamping.

Paul Clüver Family W**es is one of the stops along the route, where riders can pause for w**e and appetisers before putting their skills to the test on the pump track. From there, the route continues through the landscapes that make Elgin such a special place to explore by bike.

It is an opportunity to experience the valley from the saddle, with plenty of time to enjoy the food, w**e and scenery along the way.

There is more growing at De Rust Estate than just vines.

A recent walk to just below the summit of Aasvoëlkop, with Peter Breitenbach from HH CREW, brought two particularly special discoveries: Brunia pillansii, with only four recorded observations to date, and Erica stagnalis minor, with just three.

Through the work of the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) programme, plants like these are surveyed and documented to help build a better understanding of South Africa’s rare and threatened flora.

Finding species like these on the landscape surrounding our vineyards is a reminder of just how much there is to protect at De Rust Estate.
