on that inspired the Portuguese explorers to discover a sea route to the spice-rich East. In 1488 Bartholmeu Diaz had the first sighting of the southernmost tip of Africa. Today, the grapes for First Sighting wines are grown on Africa’s southernmost vineyards near Cape Agulhas. First Sighting wines fully express the terroir of the Elim ward, where varying soil types and relentless winds off the Atlantic ensure slow ripening, modest yields and intense flavours. At Strandveld, our story begins long before the grapes are harvested. It’s written into the soils beneath our feet, the cool maritime climate of Elim, and the constant influence of the Southern Ocean.⁠

Our vineyards grow in ancient quartzite, ferricrete, shale and gravel soils. While you won’t taste the rocks themselves, you’ll experience the character they leave behind. A distinctive minerality in our white w**es, elegant structure in our reds, and the unmistakable salinity that comes from vineyards growing at the southern edge of Africa.⁠
