Without summer’s foliage and soft greens, winter's stripped landscape gives us the opportunity to explore and enjoy the unexpected beauty of the season - the curvilinear gables and elegant symmetry of Wineland's architecture as well as the often hidden qualities and rhythms of winter taking place among the trees.

And this is the inspiration for the latest art exhibition in the La Motte Ateljee.

Opening on 4 July, Among the Trees takes the interval between winter and spring as its point of departure, bringing together a group of South African artists working across painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, installation, sound, and material experimentation. The exhibition considers how the surrounding natural world is encountered, interpreted, and translated through artistic practice.

Winter in the Winelands is the perfect time to enjoy beautiful food and wine - in front of a fireplace on rainy days and in a sunny spot when the mellow winter sun is out.

L'Ami Family Brasserie introduces a set menu for winter that promises to warm you right up! Additional to the regular L’Ami offering, the Winter Menu will be available for both lunch and dinner, from Wednesday to Sunday.

Choose between a two-course or three-course option with a choice of starters, mains and desserts. The menu also includes a glass of wine from the La Motte Reserve Collection with both starter and main course.

Great news! We were just informed about a GOLD medal for our 2023 La Motte Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2026 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Wine Awards.

We believe this wine to be the ultimate winter warmer - from its inviting red colour in the glass to the vibrant berries and warm notes of clove, turmeric and classic cigar-box on the nose and palate.

Open Call: Life is a Dream

Submissions for our Open Call Life is a Dream are almost closing!

For the 2026-2027 festive season, the La Motte Ateljee will open its Annex to showcase selected local artists working on paper in response to the theme: Life is a Dream.

The title comes from the 17th-century Spanish play by Pedro Calderon de la Barca, which reflects on the line between reality and illusion. He suggests that life can feel fleeting and theatrical, as if we are moving through something we do not fully understand. But perhaps a dream is not distant or philosophical. Perhaps it is something closer to us: a fond memory, a feeling of nostalgia, a long-awaited holiday, a personal ambition, or a special moment to celebrate and share.

Was it yesterday, or was it a dream?

This Open Call invites artists to explore the space between remembering and imagining.

Entries close on the 20th of June.

Inspired by the beauty and variety of our landscapes, our special evening of sensory experiences celebrated both visual and culinary arts with the ‘Van Horison tot Horison’ exhibition in the La Motte Ateljee, a horizontal Chardonnay tasting focusing on exceptional Franschhoek wines and a delicious dinner showcasing flavours and textures from the West Coast to the Winelands. Truly an evening to remember!
