Ryan’s curiosity in the cellar is where structure meets imagination.

For the Single Vineyard Pepper Wind Syrah 2024 & 2025, he’s taken a different path - fermenting in a ceramic pot. Unlike amphorae, these pots don’t breathe as much, shaping a wine that’s more linear, fresh and tightly focused. The result? A vibrant expression that holds onto those signature peppery notes with precision.

As Ryan puts it: “Think of the wine like a main road. In a barrel, that road widens and opens up. But in ceramic, it narrows - becoming tighter, more focused. You get a wine that’s more linear, with a clearer line of fruit.”

Less spread. More direction.
This is Syrah, refined by intention.

First light at La Colline.

Clouds sit low on the mountains, birds break the silence and the steady hum of the tractor and harvesters mark the start of the day.

This is harvest for Old Road Wine Co. Grand-mère Sémillon - the grandmother of our Single Vineyard range. A certified Heritage Old Vine, planted in 1936 and guided by experience and respect.

Among the green leaves, the Sémillon Gris stands out. Red-skinned, unmistakable. A rare natural mutation found on only a handful of farms in South Africa.

As the sun rises, we do what we’ve learned to do over generations: listen, trust the vineyard and harvest when the land tells us it’s ready.

Because the vineyard rewards those who wait.

Some answers don’t come from spreadsheets or forecasts.

They come from soil under your fingernails.

This week, Ryan was out in the La Colline Vineyard, hands deep in the earth, walking between the Old Bush Vines that have been teaching us for decades.

Feeling the ground. Studying the fruit. Listening closely.

Harvest isn’t a date on the calendar.

It’s a conversation with the land.

And we’re getting close.

The 2026 Single Vineyard Range harvest has officially begun.

Under the guidance of award-winning winemaker Ryan Puttick, the first fruit for our Single Vineyard Range has arrived in the cellar: our Stone Trail Chenin Blanc, a certified Heritage Old Vine planted in 1982.

Each harvest is a continuation of knowledge built over time - vine, site and cellar working in quiet harmony. Judging by the smile on Ryan’s face, the consistency and precision he is known for are once again firmly in place as the 2026 vintage unfolds.

Paused beneath cathedral-tall trees, a glass of our Single Vineyard Stone Trail Chenin Blanc in hand, eyes drifting toward the Franschhoek mountains. A moment that offers more than pleasure - it offers perspective.

These vines, planted in 1982, are old enough to have learned restraint. With time, their roots grow deeper, their yields smaller and their expression clearer. What they give is precision, balance and an honest reflection of place - qualities that can only be earned through decades of growth.

This is why old vines matter. They carry memory in the soil, resilience in their structure and wisdom in the fruit they produce. It’s also why this Chenin Blanc, shaped by patience and place, has been recognized with multiple international awards - a quiet affirmation of integrity over time.

A reminder that the best things are not rushed and that true quality is revealed slowly, one thoughtful moment at a time.

Old Road Wine Co. Honoured at the Veritas Awards: A Tribute to Time and Terroir

At Old Road Wine Co., we believe that great wine is not merely made - it is revealed.

Each vintage is a quiet dialogue between the land, the seasons, and the hands that tend the vine. This year, the Veritas Awards have once again recognised that story.

These accolades are more than medals. They are a reflection of the patient labour of our growers, the wisdom of our winemaker, and the unique character of our Franschhoek & Swartland terroirs.

Old Road Wine Co. Pepper Wind Limited Release Syrah 2022 takes home a DOUBLE GOLD!

This honours are not ours alone. They belong to the vineyard workers who rise with the sun, to the growers who read the land like scripture, and to those who drink with appreciation, not haste.

In every bottle: a story. In every sip: the journey.

The Basket Press: A Testament to Timeless Wisdom

Long before the age of stainless steel tanks and automated systems, there was the basket press - a marvel of ancient ingenuity. Built on simple mechanics and deep understanding of natural processes. It remains one of the most thoughtful tools in winemaking history.

Unlike modern equipment that often favors speed over subtlety, the basket press applies gentle, even pressure - preserving the nuance, structure, and character of the fruit. It’s not just a tool; it's a philosophy: one that respects the grape, the craft and the land.

At Old Road Wine Co. Ryan continues to use the Basket Press to craft his wines.

For those who seek more than flavour - for those who seek truth in terroir - the basket press stands as a quiet reminder: that sometimes, the old ways knew best.
