Nestled within a natural amphitheatre shaped by the vertical cliffs of the spectacular Simonsberg Mountain, lies Vrede en Lust Estate – home to the wines produced and bottled by the Buys family. The history of Vrede en Lust Estate is a story of passion, vision, and resurrection, which goes as far back as 1688 when Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye arrived at the Cape with the French Huguenots. Savoye immediately started improving the 60 morgen (55Ha) of land that starts at the Bergriver valley floor and runs up the eastern foothills of the majestic Simonsberg Mountain. More than 10 000 vines were planted by 1691, which grew to 80 000 by 1780. Since the de Savoye reign, Vrede en Lust Estate has changed hands a number of times and in 1996, when the Buys family became the 17th owners, they embarked on a programme of renewal to fully realise the exceptional winemaking potential of the land. Today this breathtakingly modern wine farm, a family owned and managed wine business, is a tribute to its noble roots and continues to build on over 330 years of history and heritage. Jacques De Savoye named the farm Vrede en Lust in 1688 derived from the Dutch meaning of ‘Peace and Delight’.

A TRUE TALE OF TWO TERROIRS | We are pleased to share that Ella Grenache 2023 and Early Mist Riesling 2025 have both been named National Winners at the SA Terroir Awards, Ella Grenache for Simonsberg-Paarl and Early Mist Riesling for Elgin.

Ella is grown on the northeastern slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, where decomposed granite and sandy loam soils give the wine red fruit purity and fine, sandy tannins. Early Mist is grown at Casey's Ridge in Elgin, one of the coolest and mistiest sites in the Cape winelands, known for its bright acidity and mineral edge.

Since 1688, our family has believed that great wine begins with honest terroir. It is an honour to have that belief recognised twice over.

This Women's Month we celebrated The Grace of Becoming Her. Not who the world needs us to be. Who we are becoming, quietly, intentionally, together.

Last summer filled our cups, quite literally.

Hot days across the estate. More couples than ever saying “I do” against the Simonsberg. We watched so many new memories take root here, welcomed you into our rooms and cottages, and raised a glass at celebration after celebration. Every one of them a privilege to be part of.

Now it’s winter, and the farm is doing what it does every year at this time: resting, renewing, getting ready. The gardens have gone quiet, the Manor House is calm, and the vines are taking their break too. But already, we’re dreaming about the summer of 2026/27.

Here’s to new couples, new stays, and the next chapter of what our family has been building for 338 years. It’s a story we never take for granted, and one we’re so grateful to keep sharing with you.
