Spotlight on: Lousch Adona

This family features cows with remarkable production, strong udders and plenty of body depth. They surpass our herd averages in almost all categories, and it's no strange thing to see them peak at 35 liters per lactation.

The founder of this family, Lousch Rudy 0332, was born on 15 June 2003, a daughter of Lemvig Rudy-ET and Hental Adonis2 9811.

This is one of our more medium sized families, and we are thankful for every member.

Lousch Craze Adona 21120 has been featured on our page before, highlighting her impressive production and her development form a temperamental 1st lactation cow, to her record breaking 3rd lactation production. Now early in her 4th lactation, she is already producing an average of 35 liters at 51 days in milk. She will be part of our showcase group for the Jersey Tour visit to our farm next week.

Her sister, Lousch Gutz Adona 22112 will join her in the showcase group. At just 22 days into her 3rd lactation, she is already at 23 liters, and her production continues to climb daily. We are excited to see where she will peak this time round.

The Adona family is an impressive one, and we will continue to use them in our breeding program to help build and improve the future genetics of our herd. We are proud of this family, and we look forward to showing them off during the tour next week!

Spotlight on: Lousch Molla

The Molla family is our second largest cow family, with 35 current individuals running around our farm.

Lousch Molla 9821 was the founder of the family, born on 21 December 1998. Her father was Sienhoe Berretta's Future, and her mother was Avondrood Fire's Mollie.

From a single cow, a massive family grew, with each daughter having multiple daughters of her own.

This family is also one of our most productive ones, averaging nearly 4 liters more at peak yield than the rest of the herd. These cows are milking machines with great capacity to them. Thier longevity and great fertility make them some of our most successful cows.

Lousch Sting 16070 Blindside is one of our favourites from the lot. With 4 of her own daughters, she has contributed wonderfully to growing this family. Blindside suffered an eye injury as a heifer, rendering her blind in one eye, hence her name. She has a beautiful temperament, gentle and calm despite everything else going on around her.

She will not be joining the showcase group for the World Jersey tour later this month, however Lousch Hiwe Molla 18264 Oortjies will be a part of the group.

Oortjies got her name thanks to her ears looking like they were clipped, a trait that she was born with. Her production falls in line with the rest of the family, and she has the same capacity that we have come to expect from these cows. Her daughter, Lousch Lindemann Molla 26117 was born earlier this winter, and Oortjies managed to pass her funny little ears on to Little Oortjies. We have high hopes that she also inherited her mother's brilliant production traits.

The Mollas are our most successful family, combining high production traits with positive fertility and longevity, resulting in milk machines that stand the test of time!

It's that time of year again and we have fantastic news about two memebers of our team!

Calvyn Solomons and Elton Muller took part in the annual Farm Worker of the Year Competition, and the regional awards took place last Friday.

Calvyn won first place in the Animal Production category, and Elton won first place in the General Worker category.

We are extremely proud of both of these men, their hard work and dedication is remarkable, and we are very thankful to have them as part of our team!

Spotlight on: Lousch Linda

The Linda family is one of our smaller families, but they can boast with their high milk production and longevity. These cows get the job done, are practically built to last on our farm and never give us trouble.

The founder of the family was Lousch XF Linda 9831, born 12 July 1998.

Lousch Mafia Linda 24011, affectionately known as "Kleintjie",will be featured during the Jersey Tour herd visit in September. She is our favourite of the bunch, and has quite a story behind her.

Kleintjie was born 23 January 2024, on one of the hottest days that summer. She was a small, sickly and frail calf, and our hopes were not high for her surviving the night. But she did.

And that was a pattern that would constantly repeat itself for most of Kleintjie's early life. She was ill often, and we would try our best to treat her. She would recover and soon after fall I'll again.

She was our constant patient, and we spent hours and hours working with her every day to get her back on her feet. As she got older, she became sick less often and recovered quicker, until eventually she was as healthy as a young heifer should be.

We will be honest: we didn't expect too much from her when she entered the parlor in mid April this year. With how tough her early life was, we were sure she would have been severely set back for life.

But Kleintjie, ever the surprise, had very different plans...

Our first lactation group usually peaks around 20.5 liters, at 57 days in milk. The herd as a whole peaks at 25.2 liters around 60 days in milk.

Kleintjie managed 21.1 liters at 57 days in milk, and 20.3 at 60 days. We were satisfied, but we had no idea what was to come from this little lady.

Her milk production started to climb at 68 days in milk. She surpassed her age group, she surpassed her herd mates, and peaked at 31.1 liters at 103 days in milk.

Her production was never bad, but we were not expecting the massive jump. She has consistently stayed around 27-29 liters, and we could not be more proud of our little survivour.

The Linda's are a good group and we are very excited to see what the future holds for this family!

Spotlight on: The Bardou Family

The Bardou Family is one of our smallest with only 6 current members, however it is one of our most profitable.

Featuring smaller cows with well-structured udders, this family is surprisingly good on the production front, with the eldest member Lousch Zuma Bardou 18159 peaking at 30+ liters during each lactation. Her daughter seems to be well on her way to following in her footsteps.

Small stature might not be what other herds are looking for, but smaller cows tend to do better in ours, often suffering less foot issues due to the long distances walking to our pastures, resulting in a much longer productive life. We also theorize that the smaller cows are better able to handle heat stress, making the long journeys in the summer heat less problematic for them.

The founding cow of this family was Lousch Bardou Hercu 0517, born on 25 March 2005, making this one of our newer families.

Our goal is to breed more daughters from the cows in this family, expanding their influence in our herd. They are also part of our long-term bull project, with hopes to breed a bull from them sometime in the next few years.

Two members of this family will be featured at the Jersey World Tour during our herd visit in September.

Lousch Zuma Bardou 18159 "Shorty" is the eldest of the family, and with 7 lactations under her belt, she is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. She has produced 3 daughters thus far, and we are hoping for another one from her next year. She has a remarkably neat udder for her age, and was highlighted for it at the 2023 Herd Competition during her 4th lactation.

Shorty is a trouble free cow, she has never had mastitis, never been lame, and never needed more than one round of breeding. She is in a lot of ways our ideal cow for this herd.

Her daughter, Lousch Stoney Bardou 24038, is a near carbon copy of her mother, exhibiting nearly the exact same milk production in her 1st lactation, as Shorty did in hers. We are hoping to use her in our special project program, selecting specific bulls just to use on her, diversifying her bloodline, and eventually breeding a bull from one of her daughters or granddaughters.

Spotlight on: The Natasha Family

The Natasha Family is our 4th largest family, with 31 current individuals. The cows in this family are productive and stylish, and will frequently tame themselves. These cows have strong, well attached udders and tremendous body depth, with width all the way through from front to back. Cows from this family age like fine w**e, resulting in a longer productive life in our herd.

They are one of our most consistent families, and we rarely decide against an individual from this family contributing their genetics to the future of our herd. It's the kind of family that always gets you excited when making next year's breeding decisions.

The founder of this family was Lousch Natasha 9925. Born on 5 August 1999, she was the result of Avondrood Fire's Mollie and Schoongezicht Lester's Ross. Both Avondrood and Schoongezicht are notable in their influence in the South African Jersey population, with both farms producing some truly legendary cows.

While there are many more cows from this family we would like to highlight, and we likely will showcase more of them at a later time, we selected this mother and daughter as examples of what this family is truly capable of.

Lousch 21147 Craze Natasha is currently in her 4th lactation, and hopefully pregnant with Kamakazi. She has had a rough year, surviving Redwater twice, and her milk production hasn't quite gotten to the 30+ liters she usually produces. We hope she bounces back once she returns for her 5th lactation.

Her eldest daughter, Lousch 24081 Hays Natahsa, is nearing the end of her first pregnancy and is due in early September. Her calf was sired by Avondrood Goldband Goldilocks, bred from the AvondroodTrieks family. We have our fingers crossed for a heifer, and bets are already on what we should name her.

We are very excited to welcome 24081 into the parlour, and we have high hopes for her to be just as nice as her mother and the rest of the Natasha family.

With a family like this, the future of our herd sure looks bright!

Monday, 11 May 2026, will always be remembered as one of the most difficult days in our farm's history.

It's difficult to stand back and watch the destruction, knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.

Our tank room is gone. Pieces were scattered as far as our neighbours fence line. By some miracle, only the external structure was damaged, but the tank, pipes, and electrical system was left intact.

Roofs from our sister farm next door had been completely blown off, with most of it ending up in our paddocks. Cows had to be immediately evacuated to keep them safe from the flying debris.

Our macadamia orchard suffered the worst of it. Trees broken and blown over, and nearly 80% of our 2026 harvest lying on the ground.

Despite all the damage, no one was hurt, and we are forever thankful for that.

On 5 May 2026 it started to rain and it did not stop until midday on 7 May.

All in all, we've had 208mm. Saying things are wet feels like a severe understatement.

By 11am this morning, two out of the three main dams on our farm were overflowing, with the third catching water from one of the first two. Initial reports say that the Wolwedans dam, where we get a good deal of our irrigation water from, has increased from 54% to 94%.

We had no major damage from the rain, just a few roads that will be a bit more interesting to use for the foreseeable future, and some very muddy paddocks.

The next few days will the a challenge, especially figuring out where we can move cows and heifers that isn't a muddy mess, but we are grateful for the rain.

Our dams are full and the future is looking bright! (At least it will as soon as the clouds clear up🙃)
