A steel rod are normally used to realign the edge however it is impossible to maintain a constant edge by steeling a blade. A sharpener resharpens the edge at a constant angle of your prefered choice. These are two very different jobs.

If your knife feels dull even after honing, it's because honing free hand creates a rounded edge, while using a V-SHARP you always resharpen the edge at the same constant angle.

The V-Sharp A4, Xtreme Edge, Classic II and Curve all sharpen both sides of the blade simultaneously. It's delicately and precisely restoring the edge, not just straightening it.
