The pea plant carnage has been unreal this week. I completely over planted my peas, but the birds or mice or whatever critter it is has more than taken care of thinning them out. And then some. At this point I’m going to have zero pea plants left if this doesn’t work. I have one of those mesh food covers protecting the remaining few Wando peas. Hoping for the best.

This morning I was watching a video of a farmer/florist I follow in the UK and she was building a gorgeous floral arrangement using ninebark as her main filler. When I had my little flower farm in BC I had planted four varieties of ninebark and used it ALL the time, it’s such a versatile foliage for bouquets and arrangements. So far it’s been an elusive plant for me to find here, even though my research says it is available at some nurseries in SA.

Anyways, I was inspired to get out in my garden and open my eyes to all the unique plants that I wouldn’t usually think to add to a floral arrangement. I ended up cutting some nandina, viburnum, delicate pelargonium blossoms and even added a couple grenadilla vines. I messed with this quite a bit before I was happy with it, which wasn’t until after I took the photos before I lost the light. It was so fun to get creative with what is growing in my autumn garden!

This morning I started writing a nice little post to go with this photo I took in my garden a couple days ago. I was writing about how busy this time of year is in the garden as we head in to winter soon. Not only are we cleaning up the summer abundance, we are also busy planting cool weather flowers and veggies, pre-sprouting corms, and planting bulbs in the southern hemisphere, it’s a lot.
I had foot surgery a few weeks ago and was completely off my feet for two weeks and am still not walking at full capacity. Because of that, I feel like I’m playing catch up in the garden a bit. Today I accomplished so much and was still going when it was starting to get dark outside, but I was motivated! So motivated that I wanted to get just one more tray of seeds sown and ran out to my cute little garden shed tucked in the back corner of our yard to fetch said tray, completely spacing on the fact that a storm was blowing in and I didn’t properly secure the shed door open. The shed door that latches on the outside. The shed door that promptly slammed shut behind me. And of course my phone was in the house. Friends, by the time someone miraculously heard me banging (no it wasn’t anyone in my family realizing I had been missing for a half hour), I was in tears in the dark and I never wanted to fetch something from the shed ever again. Or at least not without my phone in my pocket. 🫣How much do you want to bet Teunis will install a proper door k**b tomorrow?
What a way to end an otherwise excellent day!

I have so many really special, fancy roses in my garden, it’s easy to overlook these simple old faithfuls, Claire Matin and Iceberg. They are tucked away in a forgotten corner of the garden, rarely tended to or fussed over, but literally always blooming. Their simplicity is really lovely to behold.

The dahlias and roses are having their last hurrah of autumn. So much pretty colour, drooping heads, dropped petals and glorious chaos.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, tomato season! The first beefsteak variety out of the gate this year is Pork Chop. I’ve been growing and saving seed from this variety since I first purchased seed from back in 2011.

I’m calling this one “creamsicle dreamsicle”. I have a hundred things to do today but these beauties were begging for a photo shoot. Top left is one stalk of Lioness, top right is one stalk of Just Joey GrandiRosa. Bottom row from left to right are all Bathsheba, Crown Princess Margreta, the Poet’s Wife.
Thank you for feeding my rose addiction 🫣

This is the last dahlia delivery for the season. The soil is warm enough to plant and I am ON TOP of things this year (not like when I only planted my ranunculus and anemones a month ago 🤦🏼‍♀️).
Last year at this time our yard was a hardscaping renovation mess with a constant concrete mixing area in the middle of the yard. My garden was hectically neglected and relegated to the back of my mind. I’m really excited for how things are going turn out this year. It’s going to be so, so beautiful!
