WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN POLICY STATEMENT
Purpose: To communicate De Wagendrift Boerdery (Pty) Ltd’s commitment to environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation, and responsible farming practices to employees, suppliers, contractors, and visitors.
Policy Statement
De Wagendrift Boerdery (Pty) Ltd is committed to conducting all farming operations in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. We recognise that the protection of natural resources, wildlife, biodiversity, soil, water and air quality is essential to the long-term success of our business. All employees, contractors, suppliers and visitors are expected to support this commitment and comply with this policy while on the farm.
Our Commitments
• Maintain and annually review our Integrated Farm Management Plan and Environmental Management Plan.
• Prevent pollution of soil, water and air through responsible waste management and good agricultural practices.
• Improve water and energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint through continuous improvement initiatives.
• Protect natural habitats, indigenous flora and fauna, riverbanks and environmentally sensitive areas.
• Promote biodiversity through responsible land management, windbreaks and conservation areas.
• Apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and use pesticides only as recommended by qualified advisors and in accordance with legal requirements.
• Use fertilisers responsibly based on soil and leaf analysis.
• Manage hazardous substances, fuels and oils safely to prevent environmental contamination.
• Prevent soil erosion by maintaining ground cover and implementing appropriate conservation measures.
• Provide environmental awareness training to employees and communicate environmental expectations to suppliers and contractors.
• Monitor environmental objectives annually and establish new improvement targets during management review.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
• No hunting, trapping or harming of wildlife is permitted on the farm.
• Birds, mammals, reptiles and other wildlife must not be disturbed unnecessarily.
• Breeding and nesting habitats will be protected wherever reasonably practicable.
• Alien invasive plants will be identified and removed where appropriate.
• Riverbanks and conservation areas will be protected from pollution and unnecessary disturbance.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for implementing this policy, allocating appropriate resources and reviewing performance annually. Employees, suppliers, contractors and visitors are responsible for complying with this policy, reporting environmental risks or incidents immediately, and conducting their activities in a manner that protects the environment.
Environmental Expectations for Suppliers and Contractors
• Comply with all applicable environmental legislation and site rules.
• Prevent spills, leaks and pollution and report any environmental incident immediately.
• Dispose of waste only in designated areas.
• Respect conservation areas, wildlife and buffer zones.
• Follow all instructions relating to chemicals, fuels, machinery and waste handling.
