There’s a quiet turf war happening right under your nose.
 
While you’re sipping wine and soaking in the valley views, an invisible battle is raging between our native fynbos and a relentless army of alien invaders.
 
Wattle. Port Jackson. Blue gum. Myrtle. These ruthless colonizers are crowding out the delicate fynbos that makes the Hemel-en-Aarde so precious.
 
The stakes?
* Native fynbos dying off
* Groundwater sucked dry
* Rivers and springs stifled
* Wildfire risk skyrocketing
* Soil eroding beneath our feet
 
We’ve been grappling with these treacherous trees since day one at Spookfontein. It’s gritty, unglamorous work, but it’s a labour of love — to allow our beloved land and fynbos to flourish, and for the future generations who’ll walk these valleys long after we’re gone.
 
This is the first in a series where we’ll pull back the curtain on our fynbos custodianship. Next up: meet the villains.

Harvest begins! 🍇

On the 19th of January, we picked our first Pinot Noir for this year’s Cap Classique. In fact, two weeks earlier than last year. The vines were ready, the fruit was singing, and the season is shaping up to be a beauty.

Of course, we popped some bubbles to “bless” the start of harvest (seemed appropriate).

Here’s to the next few months of early mornings, sticky hands, and that particular magic that only happens when grapes meet cellar.

The feastivities begin!

We have a strong Chardonnay bias this month. It’s no wonder because it complements the festive season’s most famous dishes beautifully!

Our 2023 Chardonnay brings fresh notes of white peach, apple and lemon, accompanied by oak notes of toasted almonds and subtle vanilla. These notes, as well as its bold linear structure and minerality, make it the PERFECT pairing for your festive feasts.
 
Think turkey or gammon with rich, creamy sauces. And for fish fanatics, go for richer seafoods such as crayfish, prawns, trout, and kabeljou. Sear or grill them on the braai and serve with cream or butter-based sauces.
