Close to the very tip of Africa, just outside Cape Town, is the Cape Whale Coast - a pristine stretch of South African coastline that runs from the coastal hamlet of Rooiels in the west to Quoin Point in the East - flanked by mesmerizing mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The main towns are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai; but the Whale Coast is in fact made up of a collection of villages, farms, rivers, bays, coves and valleys - each filled with its own special magic.

Overstrand hosted the launch of this year’s Blue Flag and Green Coast programmes on 8 October 2026, marking 100 years of WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) and 25 years of Blue Flag in South Africa.

Grotto Beach has been part of the programme since the beginning, making the occasion particularly special for Overstrand.

All five of Overstrand Municipality’s Blue Flag beaches - Grotto, Kleinmond, Castle, Hawston and Onrus - have achieved full status. The Blue Flag season starts at the beginning of December and runs into the new year.

The event also recognised Green Coast sites across the country, including Walker Bay, through CapeNature, as well as tourism boats operated by Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours as well as White Shark Diving Company.

Coastal municipalities from across South Africa joined the three-day programme of workshops, training and knowledge-sharing, all focused on caring for our coastlines.

Another highlight was the launch of the Living Coast Prototype Signage at Grotto East Beach. The signs include Braille and digital guides with audio, subtitles and environmental information in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, making it easier for more people to learn about and enjoy our coastline.

WESSA aims to grow the Blue Flag programme to 100 beaches by 2030, building on the work done over the past 25 years to protect South Africa’s coast.

🌿 The Rooisand Boardwalk is open! 🌿

From 7 October 2026, visitors can once again enjoy the newly built boardwalk, extending up to the lookout point.

The boardwalk forms part of the 5 km Rooisand Ramble, an easy walking route along the beautiful Bot River Estuary. Follow the trail to the lookout point and take in the surrounding wetlands while keeping an eye out for some of the area’s unique birdlife. 🐦🌾

Please note: The Bird Hide is still under construction and remains closed to the public until further notice.

Come explore, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the beauty of the Bot River Estuary. 💚

Celebrating the Giants of Walker Bay from 2- 4 October 2026

As the peak whale season continues along the Overstrand coastline, Hermanus is preparing to welcome visitors for the annual Hermanus Whale Festival from 2 to 4 October 2026.

New to this year's festival is Beach Volleyball at Grotto Beach, where visitors can enjoy three days of social play, beginner sessions, open-play courts, coaching clinics and exhibition matches, presented in collaboration with the Overberg Beach Volleyball Association and the Cape Beach Volleyball Hub.

Festival-goers can also look forward to a range of activities, including the Street Parade, the Whales & Wheels Classic Car Show, the 10 km Fun Run, Family Fun Walks, Treasure Hunts featuring Pirates and Mermaids, and the Eco-Marine Village.

As has become customary during the Hermanus Whale Festival, residents and visitors should expect significantly increased traffic volumes in and around Hermanus over the festival weekend. Please allow additional travel time, be patient and follow the directions of traffic officials and event marshals.

Please make use of the free hourly shuttle services between the Waterfront and Grotto Beach.

Road Closures
* Marine Drive, from in front of Burgundy Restaurant to the Hermanus Waterfront Whale Tail, will be closed daily from 06:00 to 18:00 from 2 to 4 October 2026
* Market Street will be subject to a limited closure from 06:00 on 1 October 2026 to allow stall holders to set up
* Market Street will be fully closed from 06:00 to 18:00 daily from 2 to 4 October 2026
* Access for delivery vehicles and stall holders only will be permitted before 08:30 and after 18:00 each day during the festival

Alternative Parking
Visitors are encouraged to use available parking at:
* Hermanus Waterfront (Marine Hotel side)
* Marine Drive near the Windsor Hotel
* United Church parking area below Hoy's Koppie
* Other designated public parking areas

Temporary Parking Closures
The following parking areas will be closed:
* Monday, 28 September 2026: Gearing's Point and the Waterfront grass area
* Tuesday, 29 September 2026: Market Square parking area
* Wednesday, 30 September 2026: FNB parking area
* These areas will remain unavailable to the public throughout the Hermanus
Whale Festival weekend and during the dismantling period thereafter
* Festival infrastructure is expected to be fully removed by 7 October 2026
