Cape Whale Coast

Cape Whale Coast South Africa's Great Ocean Drive 🌊 Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Hangklip, Betty's Bay, Kleinmond, Hawston, Stanford, Gansbaai and Pearly Beach.
(1)

Close to the very tip of Africa, just outside Cape Town, is the Cape Whale Coast - a pristine stretch of South African coastline that runs from the coastal hamlet of Rooiels in the west to Quoin Point in the East - flanked by mesmerizing mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The main towns are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai; but the Whale Coast is in fact made up of a collection of villages, farms, rivers, bays, coves and valleys - each filled with its own special magic.

SOUTH AFRICA WINS GOLD AT RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2026

Leon Kluge and the South African team have won Gold at the 2026 RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London. This year's display ‘Life After Fire’ showcased the diversity of South African flowers that appear after wildfires in the Cape region. Up to 20 000 stems of Protea cut flowers as well as thousands of burnt Protea branches were arranged to create a post fire landscape where bulbs and orchids from all regions of South Africa were on display. Artist Tristan Woudberg led a team to assemble a sculptural vortex of burnt material, including charred wood and burnt branches sourced from the remnants of the devastating fires which tore through the mountainous areas of the Western Cape last year. ‘Life After Fire’ is one of South Africa's biggest displays at the RHS Chelsea flower and features a babbling ‘fonteintjie’ or natural stream complete with Disa orchids and carnivorous sundew plants. Other unique plants on display included the miniature star like flowers of Rhodohypoxis which hails from the high elevations of the Drakensberg.

The sponsors for this year's display include The Rupert Nature Foundation, Hazendal Wine Estate, Grootbos and Southern Sun.

Cape Flora SA, a non-profit established in 2005, offers their support this year and remains steadfast in its commitment to the sustainable harvesting and growth of the fynbos industry. The display promotes the demand for high-quality fynbos cut flowers in international markets, providing livelihoods for communities within the South African fynbos industry.

Story developing. Further updates to come.

South African Team: Leon Kluge, Tristan Woudberg, Jenny Malcolm, Marinda Nel, Lucas Maninjwa, Rebecca Dames, Yuko Nagamura, Tanya Visser, Marinda Nel, Vincent Kühn, Hennie Nel, Izolda Visser, Muhammed Adamjee, Jeanne Farle, Sven Musica

TOWN OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Let’s bring it home

Gansbaai is a finalist for Kwêla’s Dorp van die Jaar 2026 competition!

The big vote kicks off on 13 July.

The winner is based purely on number of votes, said Overstrand Executive Mayor, Alderman Archie Klaas. "We need all residents across the Overstrand, from Stanford and Hermanus to Kleinmond, to rally behind and support Gansbaai as one of our own.”

The winning town’s nominated community organisation will receive R1 million to invest in town improvement projects, along with an additional R1 million to host a major community event. This funding will directly support local economic activity and contribute to the beautification of Gansbaai.

Every single SMS will count. Let’s show South Africa the pride, the people, and spirit of Gansbaai.

HOW THE VOTING WORKS:
Voting Opens: Sunday, 12 July 2026 at 19:00
Voting Closes: Friday, 17 July 2026 at 12:00 midday
To Vote: SMS only the word: GANSBAAI to 33157
Cost: R1.50 per SMS. Maximum of 30 votes per phone number. Free SMS bundles do not apply.
