Hertzogville is a small cattle and sheep farming town in the Free State province of South Africa. Hertzogville lies about an hour and a half from three main cities, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Welkom. Canovium farm is in the possession of the Bornman family since 1910. The homestead followed a bit later in 1923 and turned 100 years old. Some of the original trees planted soon after the constructio
n of the homestead survived to this day. The fourth-generation family members are keeping the activities going today. Farming is mainly with cattle and sheep, but Canovium always had horses as well. These horses participated in the centenary celebrations of Bloemfontein in 1954. However, plans are progressing well to transform further into game farming. Relationships have been established with WRSA (Wildlife Ranching South Africa) and Lumarie game farm for guidance and support. In recent days, more game fencing was erected and so far, gemsbuck and impala were also introduced. Hartebeest are next to be established. Hertzogville had always been a dry area and water a scarce commodity. In recent years more boreholes have been equipped to ensure abundant water for the homestead and garden. Thinking back about the years gone by, one can only conclude that the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely, I have a delightful inheritance.
