If there was a promise I made to myself, it was making sure I work hard to wear this gown.
I remember how I’d cry myself to sleep when I saw my peers going to school and graduating. When I’d be sitting with girls my age and I couldn’t relate to them because I didn’t get the opportunity. My mom was working at a factory and my dad was a security guard then. I had no hope since my mom also passed her grade 12 well but couldn’t further her studies then.
I cried to God that he was making me a laughing stock, that I served him at church but he let this situation happen to me.
I finally got accepted at UNISA, I just started working and I was earning R4000, my registration expected R2500. I sent my uncle a SMS and I told him and he was out of the country but made sure he sent me money to register.
I fought for this degree. It was very personal to me and my parents. I knew I had to do it for them so they wouldn’t think they failed me as the first born.
I kept a promise to myself and no matter how much I wanted to give up, my family and friends encouraged me not to give up.
With this degree, I have broken a lot of curses.
