Exciting Progress in Cassava Cultivation!

For the past three years, we’ve been growing and multiplying high starch yielding industrial cassava cultivars in specialized plots.

These advanced varieties are selected for their superior starch content, essential for our tapioca starch operation.

Focusing on high-yield cultivars enhances efficiency and sustainability, improving product quality and supporting local economic growth. Our efforts aim to boost cassava production and reduce imports, driving innovation in agriculture.

We look forward to sharing more developments as we continue to advance
the cassava industry.

Project White Gold - A viable investment.

Initiated by AVCO Foods, Project White Gold establishes a cassava industry in South Africa. From farming 10,000 ha, to processing cassava into tapioca starch, this project will target both local and global markets. It aims to substitute 20,000 tons of tapioca starch imports, while also exporting to meet rising global demand, making it a lucrative opportunity in the food, textile, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Located in KwaZulu-Natal’s second poorest district, this initiative will drive economic and social transformation by creating jobs, supporting rural development, and improving infrastructure.

Led by industry veterans with experience in implementing cassava processing plants in Mozambique and Ivory Coast, the project has been confirmed as financially viable.

AVCO Foods is establishing a state-of-the-art tapioca starch operation in Mseleni (northern KZN) to process cassava into starch. This initiative will create value in the Mkanyakude district in South Africa by localising cassava.

The factory is expected to reduce imports, create local jobs, and offer market access to cassava farmers. By providing employment in rural areas, it will also help reduce urban migration.

AVCO Foods is committed to empowering rural communities by strengthening agricultural value chains and driving local economic development. This project supports the South African economy through localised food production, poverty reduction, and addressing regional economic disparities.

Why is there a growing need for South Africa and Africa as a whole to localise food production?

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for Africa to localise food production, driving a shift towards "Food Nationalism." This trend not only supports local economies but also ensures food security and fosters rural development.

By creating sustainable food value chains from farm to fork, Africa can reduce its reliance on global markets, lower costs, and decrease its carbon footprint.n Localising food production also offers a pathway to poverty alleviation and job creation, particularly in rural areas.

The key to success lies in collaboration between governments and the private sector to identify opportunities and act swiftly.

Unlocking Potential: The Future of Cassava in South Africa

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has identified the cassava starch industry as having the most potential in South Africa. With vast, unutilized land, Africa is strategically positioned to tap into this booming industry. The potential is clear: by localizing food production, we reduce dependence on imports while unlocking economic growth across the continent.

Cassava farming not only leverages Africa’s vast land resources but also drives import substitution, creating a more self-sufficient and resilient food system. Project White Gold is leading the way, with the capacity to scale as demand grows. This is more than just agriculture—it's about building sustainable futures for our communities and the entire continent.

Invest in Project White Gold by AVCO Foods

AVCO Food Processing PTY LTD is the initiator of Project White Gold. This project entails the processing of cassava tubers (Manihot Esculenta) to produce tapioca starch, a major source of carbohydrates and a valuable food ingredient. Cassava is a climate-smart crop, grown in tropical regions around the world due to its resilience in challenging climates.

The project will cultivate cassava on 10,000 unutilized hectares in South Africa (KZN), using regenerative farming practices. Processing will happen in a state-of-the-art, zero-waste factory, which will be the largest tapioca processing plant in Africa. The starch will be sold into the regional market including the SADC region, substituting imports of up to 20,000 tons of starch, and exported into the rest of Africa under the AfCFTA agreement, and will offer substantial economic and social benefits.

The initiative unfolds in three phases:
1) Identifying and securing land (started in Feb 2022)
2) Preparing for commercial farming and factory setup (started in Nov 2022)
3) Full-scale farming and production (starting in April 2025)

Led by industry veterans with experience in implementing cassava processing plants in Mozambique and Ivory Coast, the project has been confirmed as financially viable by the Bankable-Feasibility study, with a peak investment of 1.1 Billion Rand and a projected IRR of 25%
