A Sunday Feast Like No Other – Taste the Flavours of European Wild Boar
Join us at Wickedfood Earth Farm for a mouthwatering 3-course European Wild Boar Sunday lunch banquet. After years of selectively breeding free-range pigs for South African conditions, we’re excited to feature our purebred European Boar – the oldest pig breed in the world and the forefather of all modern pigs. This veld-raised pork is known for its lean, dark red meat and rich, deep flavour.

The menu:
Starter – A charcuterie platter with farm-cured meats, mezze, preserves, and freshly farm baked bread.
Main Course – A mixed roast platter of European Boar cuts, cooked in a variety of ways, served with heirloom vegetables grown right here on the farm.
Dessert – A fruity baked treat to round off the meal.
Our pigs are raised free-range, without growth stimulants or antibiotics, ensuring top-quality, flavourful meat.
When: Sunday 13 April @ 12:00

It's time to start planning for Growing Garlic for 2025
Garlic is a two phase growing crop. We plant in mid February to mid March, when it grows vigorously above ground, with beautiful foliage. Around May/June it goes into hibernation, waiting for the warmth of spring and longer days. It's then that all the below ground action happens, as the heads start to form and grow, for harvest in September to November. It's a crop that will test your patience. One of the biggest mistakes is harvesting too early. In the last two weeks in the ground heads can more than double in size. Harvested garlic has a shelf life of ±6 months if stored correctly.
Over the past 15 years we've planted over 25 varieties. I find that most seed takes a few years to settle down in an area and one needs to persevere. We have 10 varieties that have become our standard, with another ±5 trial varieties each year.
Egyptian pink never fails to impress us and we find it the easiest to grow, followed by Tuscan and Egyptian White. We’ve been growing our Egyptian Pink for 15 years now and slowly bred a slightly larger clove than the standard available in the market place.
This year we have very limited stock available for sale, both for eating and for growing. We are able to Pudo throughout the country. To get our price list, please email [email protected].

We're also running a 1-day garlic growing workshop on 25 January, see https://wickedfoodearth.co.za/growing-garlic-for-winter-vegetable-gardening-2022/

Did you know.....
Giant or Elephant Garlic is not actually a garlic, it is a member of the leek family that looks, tastes and behaves like a garlic.
There are only 4 cloves per head. it also grows seed or bulbis on the outer perimeter of the main head. If these are planted they grow into single headed cloves (great for processing). Planted again in the third season and they become normal 4 clove heads.
Giant or Elephant Garlic has a mild flavoured, and popular for processing as its easy to peel. Perfect for eating raw in salads, if finely sliced.

At Wickedfood Earth we sell the seed in packs of 50 @ R150 per pack. We also have a limited supply of other organic heirloom garlic seed for sale, email [email protected] to order.

We are so sad to hear that Dave Myers from The Hairy Bikers has passed away at the age of 66. He was an incredible man and a talented chef. Sending all our love to Si King, Dave's wife Lili, family and close friends, from everyone at BBC Food.

Wickedfood Earth Farm has been farming with free-range pigs for over 12 years. We’ve been very successful, raising over 1 500 pigs during this period with very few problems. We don’t use any growth stimulants or antibiotics. In all this time we’ve only lost 2 sows during farrowing, and 2 pigs due to snake bites. We use the meat to make charcuterie and for our workshops, as well as selling fresh cuts directly to the public.

Wickedfood Earth Farm, located in The Magalies Valley, Gauteng, has a selection of pigs for sale, from 10 weeks old, to gilts and boars ready for breeding. For more information on what we have for sale at the moment, please email - [email protected]
