Bonsmara, Drakensberger, Nguni and Afrikaner. What do these cattle breeds have in common? They are all examples of indigenous cattle breeds, each with characteristics that have made them well suited to South African cattle production. With Heritage Month recently in the spotlight and South Africans reflecting on the traditions, innovations and resources that make the nation unique, it's the perfect time to discuss the cattle breeds that have become part of our agricultural heritage.
Thank you to Radio Teemaneng for hosting Thapelo Kgosi Ramokala, better known as “King” and Beefmaster's Animal Health Specialist, to talk to listeners about this topic.
The discussion covered what makes local breeds valuable, advantages of breeding with local cattle, how they perform under South African conditions, and the distinctive traits that set different breeds apart.
