Barometric pressure can influence fish feeding, but it’s best thought of as one piece of the puzzle, alongside tide, water temperature, wind, light, current and available food.

Fish experience changes in pressure through the water, and species with a swim bladder may be particularly sensitive to pressure changes. The interesting part for anglers is that the trend in pressure can sometimes matter more than the actual number.

🎣 FALLING PRESSURE – THE PRE-FRONT FEED

When atmospheric pressure starts dropping ahead of a weather system, conditions often change at the same time: wind increases, cloud cover builds and light levels fall. Predatory fish can become more active, and anglers often associate this period with a stronger feeding window.

This is why the hours before a front or storm can sometimes produce fantastic fishing.

🌧️ LOW PRESSURE – CONDITIONS ARE EVERYTHING

Low pressure itself doesn’t automatically mean good fishing. Rough seas, dirty water, strong wind or rapidly changing temperatures can either create excellent feeding conditions or make an area almost unfishable.

For rock and surf anglers, however, increased white water and disturbed sand can expose food and give predators additional cover.

☀️ RISING PRESSURE – THE POST-FRONT CHALLENGE

Once a front passes and pressure begins climbing rapidly, anglers often report tougher fishing. Bright skies, calmer conditions and other environmental changes associated with the passing front can all contribute.

Fish haven’t necessarily stopped feeding — you may simply need to change your approach.

Try fishing deeper water, structure, gullies and areas offering cover, and consider slowing down your presentation.

📈 STABLE PRESSURE – CONSISTENCY CAN HELP

A prolonged period of relatively stable weather can produce more predictable conditions. Instead of concentrating solely on pressure, this is when tide movement, water temperature, water colour and baitfish activity can become particularly useful clues.

🎯 SO SHOULD YOU WATCH THE BAROMETER?

Absolutely — but don’t let it decide whether you go fishing.

A rapidly falling barometer combined with an approaching front might tell you that an interesting feeding window is developing. A rapidly rising barometer after a front might suggest you’ll need to work harder.

But there’s no magic pressure reading that guarantees the fish will bite.

The best anglers don’t watch one number — they watch what the entire environment is doing. 🎣🌊

🎣🔥 Why reel maintenance is so important

Your reel is one of the hardest working pieces of equipment in your setup…
Yet it’s also one of the most neglected.

A lack of maintenance doesn’t just affect performance — it can cost you fish, money, and frustration.

⚙️ 1. Saltwater destroys reels

Fishing in saltwater is brutal on gear.

* Salt gets into bearings and gears
* Moisture causes corrosion
* Internal parts start wearing down

Even one session without cleaning can start causing damage.

🎯 2. Smooth drag = landed fish

Your drag system is everything when fighting fish.

A poorly maintained reel can lead to:

* Jerky drag
* Line snapping
* Lost fish

A clean, greased reel = smooth, consistent pressure when it matters most.

🔄 3. Better casting performance

Dirty or dry reels:

* Don’t cast as far
* Feel heavy and sluggish
* Cause unnecessary friction

Maintained reels cast smoother, further, and more accurately 🎯

💸 4. Saves you money long-term

Replacing reels is expensive.

Regular maintenance:

* Extends lifespan
* Prevents major damage
* Keeps your gear performing like new

A quick clean now can save you thousands later.

🧰 5. Small effort, big reward

You don’t need a full strip every time.

After each session:

* Rinse lightly with fresh water
* Dry properly
* Apply reel oil or grease where needed

Every few trips:

* Do a deeper clean

🔥 6. Confidence on the water

There’s nothing worse than:
👉 Hooking a proper fish… and your reel fails

Maintained gear gives you:

* Confidence
* Reliability
* Peace of mind

🔥 Bottom line

Look after your reel… and it will look after you.

Because when that big fish picks up your bait —
👉 Your reel needs to be the last thing you worry about 🎣💥

🎣💧 What To Do With Non-Sealed Reels When You Get Home

If your reel isn’t sealed, what you do after every trip makes the biggest difference between a reel lasting months… or years 👇

🚿 1. Rinse — But Do It Properly

👉 Light freshwater rinse only
• Use low pressure (no blasting!)
• Keep reel upright
• Let water run over it — don’t force water inside

❌ High pressure = pushes salt deeper into the reel

🧻 2. Dry It Off
• Wipe with a cloth
• Let it air dry completely

👉 Don’t pack it away wet — that’s how corrosion starts

🔄 3. Spin & Work the Reel
• Turn the handle a few times
• Open/close the bail arm

👉 Helps move out any trapped moisture

🛢️ 4. Light Oil (Key Areas Only)

Apply a drop of oil to:

✔️ Line roller
✔️ Handle k***s
✔️ Bail arm joints

👉 Keeps everything smooth and protected

⚠️ 5. Back Off Your Drag

🔑 This is a big one most anglers forget

• Loosen your drag after every trip

👉 Prevents washers from compressing and wearing out

🧼 6. Deeper Clean (Every Few Trips)
• Remove spool
• Wipe shaft and inside
• Check for salt buildup

👉 You don’t need a full service every time — just basic upkeep

🎒 7. Store It Properly
• Keep in a reel bag or dry space
• Avoid humid areas

👉 Salt + moisture sitting = silent killer

🔥 Final Thought

Non-sealed reels need care — but look after them, and they’ll perform just as well as the expensive stuff.

Skip the maintenance… and the ocean will claim it
