Some people are part of a chapter in your life. Others help write it.

This morning we received the heartbreaking news that William Drummond passed away.

William had been battling sleeping sickness, and during treatment his kidneys and liver began to fail. Sadly, they never recovered.

When I started Choronga Safaris in 2004, William was one of the Professional Hunters who stood alongside me in those early years. From 2004 until he moved to Zambia in 2012, he was a huge part of Choronga and played an important role in helping me build the company into what it is today.

Those early years were filled with long days, hard work, plenty of challenges, incredible safaris, and memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. When you spend that many years hunting, traveling, working, and sharing camp together, someone becomes much more than a Professional Hunter you work with.

William became part of the Choronga family and a very important part of our story.

In 2012, life took him north to Zambia and our paths went in different directions, but I have never forgotten what he contributed during those formative years of Choronga Safaris or the many memories we made along the way.

Today is an incredibly sad day for everyone who knew William.

Rest easy, old friend. Thank you for the years, the memories, the adventures, and most of all, for being there in the beginning.

You will always be part of the Choronga story.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with William’s family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.

Bowhunting a Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra — Namibia 🇳🇦🏹

Earlier this season, Uncle Mike joined us in Namibia for a Dik-Dik and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra bow hunt.

The Dik-Dik took a few more days than we had planned, leaving us with only a couple of days to move up to the edge of Etosha National Park and hunt the elusive Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.

Traditionally, we would hunt these zebra by spot-and-stalk or set up an ambush along a well-used trail, but with time running short, we decided to try a waterhole with an old elevated blind that one of the local PHs told us about.

On the second sit, Uncle Mike connected with this gorgeous stallion. 💪🏻

The blind—pictured last—hadn’t been used in years and was almost completely rotten. We took our chances anyway, kept movement to an absolute minimum, and prayed it would hold the three of us for just one more day. 😂

LEOPARD! 🐆🇿🇲

Uncle Doug connected with this big tom on the 7th afternoon of his hunt here in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley.

He jumped into the tree at 15:59, but spent a lot of time lying down and standing at awkward angles. Clinton and Uncle Doug stayed patient and waited for the perfect opportunity. Nearly 30 minutes later, they finally made the call.

A perfect shot, and this big boy went just 40 yards. 💪🏻

By day 5 of the hunt, we had 4 males, 11 females and 2 sub-adults feeding on our baits. Lots and lots of cats in the Luangwa Valley!

Mokoro — the traditional dugout canoe. 🛶🇿🇲

We ran into these local fishermen literally out in the middle of nowhere in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley. They were busy hollowing out this tree by hand to make themselves a new fishing vessel.

It’s a lot of hard work, and one wrong swing can ruin everything. Pretty impressive watching how skilled they are with their mpavis — traditional handmade axes — slowly shaping a tree into something they’ll use on the river.

The things you get to see on safari go far beyond the animals. It’s all part of the experience and what makes Africa such a special place.

He took a number of great trophies, including a massive Sable Bull, Waterbuck, Nyala, Blue Wildebeest & Warthog.

Congratulations Clint on an incredible first African safari and some outstanding trophies. We’re already looking forward to having you back with us in 2028!

While helping track Clint’s Wildebeest, Logan came across this Waterbuck bull carcass. Judging by what we found, he more than likely died from injuries sustained while fighting another bull.

This is the Chobe Bushbuck, a subspecies that differs quite a bit from the Limpopo Bushbuck most of our hunters are more familiar with. Pictured second is Uncle Doug’s Limpopo Bushbuck from 2024.

African Home Depot. 😂🌾

For Leopard blinds in these remote areas, we use a combination of popup blinds and natural grass blinds.

This time of year in the Luangwa, good long grass can sometimes be surprisingly hard to find. So we made a quick stop at our local “Home Depot”—a small fishing village that had all the building supplies we needed.

A few bundles of grass later and we were back in business.

Sometimes safari logistics are a little different out here. 🐆🇿🇲
