Quality is not optional - it's protection.

Food Safety & Quality Assurance not only protects consumers, but it also protects you as the brand owner. One unsafe product can permanently damage credibility and consumer trust - often beyond recovery.

I define quality simply as consistency. And consistency is achieved through well-designed SOPs.

One of the companies I deeply admire, Coca-Cola, puts it best:
“Quality is about manufacturing a product people can depend on every time they reach for it.”

A powerful quality mindset starts with one question:
“What is the worst thing that could happen with this product?”
Then you work backwards to prevent it - using SOPs.

SOPs exist for when things may go wrong. History has shown us this clearly - from the listeriosis outbreak (2017/2018) to the Liqui-Fruit recall (2020/2021). That is why traceability SOPs are critical when recalls occur.

In crowded markets, quality can be your strongest differentiator.

Sales of conventional carbonated soft drinks are slowing, with some categories even experiencing negative growth. Consumers are increasingly questioning high sugar content and looking for beverages that offer more than just sweetness and carbonation.

While traditional soft drinks remain dominant and affordable for South Africa’s low-income majority, this dominance is being challenged by rising health consciousness and the growth of alternatives such as bottled water, fruit juices, and functional beverages.

Urban, time-constrained consumers are placing greater value on convenience, nutrition, and sugar/calorie awareness. As a former CEO of Pioneer Foods once noted, this is a trend that cannot be ignored - and one that serious food and beverage companies must respond to when developing new products.

This is a trend we take seriously at The Clean Drink Co.
It directly informs our mission: to develop cleaner, better-for-you, functional beverages - starting with our debut product, and extending into everything we build in the future.

In October 2025, I officially began working with a team at BICSA (Bakery & Food Technology Incubator) on the professional development of our debut product, NIMU, under The Clean Drink Co.

Before that, I was making early samples in my kitchen with a basic recipe provided by a food technologist. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start. I’ve always believed in building with what you have, and that quote from Napoleon Hill stayed with me:
“Do not wait. The time will never be ‘just right’. Start where you stand with whatever tools you have.”

However, I eventually paused kitchen trials. I wanted to ensure the product met proper standards for:
taste and consistency,
food safety and hygiene,
shelf-life stability, and
regulatory compliance.

So I partnered with BICSA to refine the formulation. Over multiple visits in October and November, we reviewed samples, adjusted flavour, validated the concept, and built a version of NIMU I’m genuinely confident in.

This is the first time I’m sharing this publicly. I’m naturally private, but progress deserves to be acknowledged.
In 2026, we take the next steps forward. Slow build, intentional growth, and full focus.

One of the biggest misconceptions many beverage founders (including us early on) have is believing that success starts with getting into major grocery chains.

In reality, many of South Africa’s most successful drink brands started outside formal retail.

MoFaya, founded by DJ Sbu, was first sold directly to consumers on the streets before entering retail. A ginger beer brand we know began by selling at taxi ranks - specifically, Bosman Taxi Rank in Pretoria - and today that same product is stocked by retailers like Food Lover’s Market.

Here’s why starting small and direct matters:

1. Retailers require traction and compliance.
Large chains rarely list products without proven sales, and their regulatory, packaging, and listing requirements are often beyond the reach of early-stage brands.

2. Cash flow is a real barrier.
Big retailers operate on long payment terms. Without strong cash reserves, receivables alone can cripple a young beverage business.

3. Big stores aren’t always where the volume is.
Significant beverage sales often happen in convenience stores, spaza shops, liquor stores, and on-the-go environments - where customers are actively looking for a quick refreshment or energy boost.

When you move meaningful volume in smaller outlets and build a loyal customer base, large retailers eventually come looking for you.

Distribution follows demand - not the other way around.
