Jacques didn’t need more willpower. He needed meals that kept him SATISFIED & nourished.

When he started, he:
weighed 145kg (320 lbs),
was diabetic,
had high blood pressure and
high cholesterol, and
was taking several medications.

He was constantly tired. Always hungry. And completely out of control around food.

He’d skip meals, snack on whatever he could find, arrive at dinner starving, overeat… and sometimes even wake up at night to eat.

Then he changed the way he ate.

He started following a low-GI, balanced approach using the principles and recipes from my Eating for Sustained Energy books.

No extreme dieting.
No feeling deprived.
Just simple, consistent changes that were realistic enough to adopt for life.

Within the first month, he started losing weight.

After 12 months:
• 50 kg (110 lbs) of fat lost
• Blood sugar back to normal
• Off ALL his medication!
• More energy than he’d had in years

And this is the bit I love most…

“It wasn’t even difficult.” 😮🎉

That’s exactly why I created the FREE 1-Week Smart Health Challenge.

For one week, you’ll get:
✅ a clear meal plan,
✅ recipes from my bestselling books
✅ a shopping list and
✅ practical guidance based on the same Smart Health principles: regular balanced meals, low-GI carbs, sensible portions and everyday foods.

So instead of wondering whether this way of eating could work for you, you can actually TRY it for free!

If you want to improve your weight, blood sugar and long-term health, start with these 6 things:

🌟1. EAT REGULAR, BALANCED, LOW-GI MEALS.
Skipping meals to “save calories” usually ends with you ravenous later. Build meals around low-GI carbs, protein, good fats and plenty of vegetables to stay satisfied longer and support steadier blood sugar.

🌟2. CHOOSE SMARTER CARBS — DON’T CUT THEM OUT.
Low-GI carbs digest more slowly and help keep you fuller for longer. Think whole grains, legumes, lower-GI breads and cereals, and less-refined carbs.

🌟3. FILL HALF YOUR PLATE WITH PLANTS.
Vegetables, fruit and legumes give you fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support your gut, heart and long-term health.

🌟4. EAT PROTEIN AND FAT — JUST DON’T GO OVERBOARD.
Choose lean, minimally processed protein and healthier fats from foods like nuts, seeds, avocado, olives and oily fish. More isn’t always better.

🌟5. WATCH THE “LITTLE EXTRAS.”
The soft drink. The crisps while you cook. The cheese from the grater. The second helping. The weekend drinks. It all adds up.

🌟6. MOVE FOR 30–60 MINUTES EVERY DAY.
Daily movement helps you lose fat, not muscle, while supporting your blood sugar, heart, energy and strength.

This is the “boring” stuff that WORKS.

Regular balanced meals. Smarter carbs. Plenty of plants. Sensible portions. Fewer sneaky extras. Daily movement.

It may not sound as exciting as the latest extreme diet, but it’s the stuff you can actually KEEP doing.

This is exactly how my clients and I have lost 20–110 lbs — and kept it off for life.

Maybe it’s not that you “can’t stick to a diet.” Maybe you’re just truly HUNGRY!

That sounds obvious, but it matters.

A high-GI carbohydrate on its own may keep you satisfied for only around an hour.

Choose a low-GI carbohydrate instead, and that can stretch to roughly three hours.

Then build a properly balanced meal by adding protein and fat, and you can stay satisfied for around five hours.

That changes the conversation quite a bit.

If you’re constantly white-knuckling your way from one meal to the next, thinking about snacks, fighting cravings and telling yourself you need more willpower, the problem may not be your self-control.

Your meals may simply not be keeping you satisfied for long enough.

This is one of the reasons I’ve spent decades teaching people to eat regular, Low GI, balanced meals rather than trying to survive on restriction.

The combination matters: choosing smarter carbohydrates, including lean protein and the right amount of good fat, and eating enough at meals can help support steadier blood sugar and keep hunger at bay for longer.

And when you’re not RAVENOUS two hours after eating,
health choices become a whole lot easier to make!

🌟That’s the point: when your meals are Low GI and balanced, you don’t have to rely on willpower to get through the day.

You’re giving your body what it NEEDS to stay satisfied, keep blood sugar steady, and curb hunger. This makes healthier choices easier to maintain for life!

I thought losing the weight would be the hard part.

It wasn’t.

Keeping it off was what forced me to UNDERSTAND what was really going on.

At 18, I did what so many people still do now: I ate less, lost the weight, and thought I’d solved the problem.

Then I gained it all back 🫣

And like so many people do, I blamed myself.
I thought I should have been more disciplined and stronger. I believed it was my fault and felt like a failure 😞

That experience is what sent me into nutrition.

It’s why I became a Registered Dietitian.

It’s why I later did a Master’s Degree in blood glucose control.

And over more than 40 years of working with over 10,000 patients, I kept coming back to the same conclusion:

The answer is never another extreme diet!

It’s understanding how food affects your blood sugar, hunger, weight and long-term health — and learning how to eat in a way you can realistically keep doing FOR LIFE!

That’s what the Smart Health Diet is built on.

And after losing those 22 lbs again, what I value most isn’t just that I’ve kept the weight off for nearly 50 years…

… It’s the fact that food no longer runs my life.
… I can enjoy it without feeling guilty.
… I can make balanced choices.
… I can enjoy my family and everyday life without constantly thinking about food and calories.

🌟That’s the kind of freedom I want for you too.

If you’ve spent years “starting over,” blaming your willpower, or feeling out of control around food, follow along.

Here I share practical, evidence-based nutrition advice to help you
lose excess weight,
manage your blood sugar,
feel more satisfied throughout the day,
have more energy,
and improve your long-term health.

Monday comes and you’re determined.

This week you’ll eat properly.
You’ll stop snacking or “cheating”.
You’ll make healthier choices.
You’ll finally stick to it.

And for a while, you do.

Then you get hungry when you think you shouldn’t be hungry. You eat something that wasn’t “on the plan.”

Tomorrow it happens again.

And before long, you’re thinking:
“Why am I so weak?”

So you promise yourself you’ll start again on Monday.

After more than 40 years working as a dietitian, I’ve watched this cycle play out more times than I can count.

And I’ve heard the same words again and again:
“I know what I should be eating. I just can’t seem to stick to it.”

But here’s what I want you to know:
🌟You’re not failing. The diets are.

If a way of eating leaves you:
constantly hungry,
cutting out foods you enjoy,
skipping meals or fasting to “save calories,”
or relying on willpower every time food is put in front of you,
struggling to stick to it doesn’t automatically mean there’s something wrong with you.

There is real nutrition science behind why what you eat, when you eat and how your meals are balanced can affect your blood sugar, hunger, energy and what happens later in the day.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to unpack some of that.

We’ll talk about things like:
🌮 why skipping meals can work against you,
🌮 what the glycaemic index actually tells us about carbohydrates and blood sugar,
🌮 why balanced meals matter, and
🌮 why healthy eating shouldn’t require you to live in a constant battle with food.

Most importantly, I want to show you that getting healthier doesn’t have to mean finding another diet you’re somehow supposed to follow perfectly.

Especially if you’re tired of “starting over” every Monday.

I’ve been a little quiet... and now I can finally tell you why 👀

We’ve completely revamped the Smart Health Diet website!

After more than 40 years of working in nutrition, one thing still frustrates me enormously: people who genuinely WANT to improve their health are surrounded by more conflicting nutrition advice than ever.

Cut carbs. Eat more protein. Fast. Don’t fast. Avoid fruit. Eat more fat. Take this supplement. Try this diet...

No wonder people don’t know what to believe anymore.

So we wanted our website to do a much better job of what Smart Health has always been about:

Helping you cut through the confusion and understand how to eat for better long-term health — using nutrition principles grounded in decades of scientific evidence, not the latest trend.

The science behind our approach hasn’t suddenly changed.

But the way we’re helping you understand and actually USE it, has 😉

We’ve made things clearer, simpler and far more practical — with plenty of resources to help you put what you learn into practice.

And there’s a rather exciting FREE place to start, too... 🥗👀

The revamped Smart Health Diet website is coming very soon!

I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on 💚

The oldest, healthiest people in the world don’t cut out any food groups. Read that again.

They eat regular, balanced meals that always include good carbs.

And that’s exactly what I teach.
Not because it’s trendy… but because it WORKS — long term.

When I work with clients, I don’t just give them a list of “don’ts”.

I walk them through:
• what food does to their body
• what’s actually going on in their body
• where things might be going wrong (often in ways they didn’t realise)
• and how to adjust their meals so they feel satisfied, in control, and see & feel results.

Because here’s the part most people don’t want to hear…

It’s usually NOT about willpower.

It’s about habits, structure, and understanding your body. And this is where so many people get misled.

Fad diets promise quick results…
but they’re often not based on long-term science
and can do more harm than good in the long run.

Many people — especially diabetics — have become afraid of carbs…
…but don’t realise that too much protein can also place strain on the body- and even increase your cravings!

You don’t need extremes to get results.

You need:
✔ balance
✔ consistency
✔ and a way of eating you can actually sustain

We can learn a lot from the people who’ve lived the longest.
They didn’t get there by chasing trends.
They got there by eating in a way that supports their body — every day.

If you’re tired of trying and trying and trying to lose weight…
maybe it’s time to stop trying harder and start doing things differently?

If you’d like a realistic, sustainable plan that’s tailored to you — your lifestyle, your health, your goals —
You’re welcome to book a consultation with me, Liesbet Delport - Registered Dietitian, M.Sc. Dietetics, 40+ years of experience.

I’ll help you understand what your body actually needs… and how to make simple changes (based on long-term scientific evidence) that’ll get you lasting results.

👉 Comment “CONSULTATION” below, and I’ll send you the details.

Are your thoughts SUPPORTING you? Or are they shaming you?

How you talk to yourself can make your weight loss journey empowering OR an exhausting, empty, uphill battle.

Be REASONABLE and KIND to yourself. Hunger does not equal weight loss. You can lose weight without feeling hungry all the time!

🌟 The key is eating mostly:
… Low GI carbs with
… plenty of fibre (this keeps you full for longer).
… Regular meals (don’t skip meals, it always backfires)
… Balanced meals (with quality carbs are paired with protein, veggies, fruit, and healthy fats, you’ll finally feel satisfied for hours and stop craving sugar!)

I wanna know… which one hit closest to home for you?

The bad dietary advice online is literally giving me grey hair! So, let’s set the record straight.

Losing weight can be difficult, yes, but KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF is something that “quick fix diet trends” will never be able to help you with - especially when you follow popular advice online.

(Wow, the suffering and self-doubt that fad diets put people through is heartbreaking!)

In my 40 years of helping over 10,000 people lose weight and keep it off, I’ve seen there are 3 unpopular things that ALWAYS work to help you lose weight in a balanced, sustainable, and permanent way:

1. You’ve got to STOP cutting carbs.
Your body NEEDS wholegrain low GI carbs.

They’re GOOD, not evil.
They keep your energy stable,
help you 💩 easily,
and regulate your blood sugar.

When you cut carbs out of your diet, it mostly leads to food cravings (especially sweet treats!) and uncontrolled eating.

2. Start moving naturally. You don’t need to gym for hours, but you’ve got to MOVE.

Make it fun for yourself - go for a walk or dance to your favourite music.

The “blue zones” (where the oldest, healthiest people in the world live) have routines that naturally prompt daily activities like walking, gardening, and housework. This constant, low-intensity movement, such as gardening or using hand-operated tools, is woven into daily life, providing cardio benefits and reducing stress.

3. Eating mostly low GI. This is KEY because then you lose weight without feeling hungry all the time!

One slice of processed white bread has roughly the same amount of calories as a slice of whole-grain sourdough bread.

Eat 2 slices of white, processed bread, and you’ll be hungry 1 hour later.

Eat 2 slices of whole-grain sourdough bread, and you’ll only be hungry 2 hours later!

Same calories, different results.

I’ll see you in the comments!
