MEET THE BREEDER | 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐬
Stormberg Merinos Stud was established in 1976, over 50 years ago. It was founded on the principles of group breeding through the original Stormberg and Top Tier Merino studs, where a holistic approach to improving the 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 of sheep has always been paramount.
This philosophy has produced 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐲, 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 animals that consistently shear an acceptable quantity of 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐥, with members of the Stormberg Merinos group achieving outstanding results at wool sales over the past five years, regularly placing in the top three and often securing the top price.
The stud has been run on Buffels Fontein since 2007 under the management system of 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐧, 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, with the formal incorporation of Top Tier Merinos into the flock in 2015, resulting in the 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐬 of today.
Selection remains firmly rooted in these original group breeding principles, with 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐏 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐲𝐞, assisted by 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘺.
Rams are subjected to a rigorous multi-phase selection process from weaning through to maturity, with selected two-tooth rams generally used only once on both stud and commercial ewes to accelerate genetic progress.
Only the 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 are retained through further selection and ultimately offered for sale, reflecting the stud’s 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲-𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐬, and ensuring ongoing progressive genetic turnover.
