💧 Does a lower TDS reading mean healthier drinking water?

A handheld Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter can help track changes in your water—but its reading cannot tell you whether that water is suitable for drinking.

In Understanding TDS in Drinking Water – Part 1, Andre Goosen explains what the
numbers mean for South African homeowners using municipal water, rainwater or boreholes.

Three things to remember:
🔹 TDS does not identify individual contaminants. The reading cannot tell you how much nitrate, fluoride or lead is present.
🔹 Low TDS does not rule out germs. A meter cannot test for bacteria, viruses or parasites.
🔹 TDS and hardness are different. A softener addresses hardness; a large drop in TDS is not the measure of successful softening.

Recent incidents highlight a serious consumer health concern: safe drinking water depends on maintained infrastructure, competent technical staff, reliable disinfection and effective monitoring.

In Bronkhorstspruit, authorities linked 408 gastrointestinal illness cases to contaminated water. Investigators identified interrupted chlorination, malfunctioning pumps and filters, upstream sewage pollution and failures to warn residents.

At Rhodes University in Makhanda, gastrointestinal illnesses prompted urgent investigations and water testing. The cause remains under investigation.

South Africa’s Blue Drop findings have previously identified maintenance deficiencies and technical-capacity shortcomings. Where these weaknesses persist, the risk of further contamination incidents can increase. This does not establish that every municipal supply is unsafe, but it warrants informed consumer action.

If your area experiences recurring breakdowns, sewage spills or documented technical-capacity concerns, request current water-quality results and arrange appropriate testing at your drinking-water tap. These warning signs justify assessment; they do not, on their own, prove contamination.

Where safety is uncertain, use reputable bottled water or an officially confirmed safe supply. For ongoing protection, obtain professional advice on treatment with verified bacterial protection, appropriate installation, maintenance and testing. Ordinary taste-and-odour filters are insufficient assurance.
