The Ostrich mating/breeding season is in full swing with the adult Female birds laying eggs every second day, and with the help of the Male birds incubating the eggs for a period of 42 days before the chicks hatch. With this in mind I want to share a few interesting facts about Ostrich Eggs: they are huge!
This is the biggest egg in the world laid by the biggest bird in the world. Ostrich eggs are on average 17 to 19cm in length and 14 to 15cm in width. Ostrich eggs can weigh up to 1,9Kg compared to a hen's egg which weighs between 50 and 70 grams. One Ostrich egg is equal to around 24 hen's eggs. Another interesting fact: while Ostrich eggs are the largest of all eggs, they are the smallest eggs relative to the size of the adult bird. An ostrich egg weighs less than 1% of the female's body weight!
