Foraging begins with paying attention.

Many retreats include guided walks through the forests and fynbos of the Walker Bay Conservancy, learning to identify seasonal plants, herbs and medicinal flora.

Some are prepared over fire.
Some become tea.
Some become smudge sticks.
Some are simply noticed and left where they are found.

In practice, foraging also involves learning how to move through the landscape – harvesting carefully, taking only what is abundant, understanding which plants are protected, and recognising the rhythms of season, weather and regeneration.

The emphasis is on observation, reciprocity and care, not just extraction.

The practice is as much about collecting as it is about learning relationship with place.

Bodhi Forest is our newest standalone, all-inclusive venue – a quiet, private space built for uninterrupted group work and shared practice.

The Barn sits at the center – a practical workspace where wide doors open directly to the forest and the natural light of the valley. Inside, there is a wood fire, space to study, and room for collective dialogue or movement.

Living quarters range from private rooms to shared spaces, offering configurations for both quiet solitude and communal connection.
A self-contained environment defined by the simple, quiet rhythm of the land.

At Bodhi Khaya and Bodhi Forest, one of our core, ongoing missions is the active rehabilitation of the surrounding landscape.

Through our partnerships with our neighbours Platbos Forest Reserve and non-profit Greenpop, we are working to reforest and restore the original indigenous coastal and Afromontane species that once thrived here. Our land serves as a vital ecological link, expanding and reconnecting the small remaining remnants of indigenous forest to the old-growth stands of the Platbos and Grootbos Reserves.

This stewardship is a continuous, daily initiative managed by our team. In the background of daily life here, this work is practical and ongoing. Some days it looks simple and physical - carrying mulch, watering young trees, removing invasive growth, or simply spending time learning how the ecosystem restores itself over time.

The pace is steady rather than dramatic, grounded in care, repetition, and attention. Small actions by many hands.

During the Wintering Retreat at Bodhi Forest, 1 to 5 July, participants have access to Bemer3000 sessions as part of the wider programme of rest and recovery.

BEMER is a form of Physical Vascular Therapy designed to support microcirculation, mitochondrial repair and the body’s natural self-healing processes.

By improving blood flow and supporting oxygen and nutrient delivery through the body, the treatment may assist with: better energy production, recovery and regeneration, immune function, sleep quality, and nervous system regulation.

Alongside the Bemer3000 sessions, the retreat gently supports nervous system regulation through somatic and contemplative practices, restorative yoga, pranayama, yoga nidra, silence, nature immersion, sauna and cold-water therapy, nourishing meals, and deep rest. Together, these practices help shift the body from chronic stress and depletion into a more grounded, parasympathetic state where healing, repair and true restoration can unfold.

Stillness and movement.
Rest, then immersion.

People move between the sauna, mountain water, fires, blankets, books, conversation, practice, and choosing rest without needing to justify it. The body pays closer attention.

Research around cold exposure and seasonal rest points to real physical and emotional benefits: improved circulation, nervous system regulation, deeper sleep, reduced inflammation, and improved mood through the release of endorphins and dopamine. Alternating heat and cold can also help the body recover from stress while building resilience and presence.

Winter here often means slower mornings, warming meals shared over longer tables. There is space here to be held by the season instead of pushing against it.

Winter is the physiological window to pull inward, protect your energy, and rebuild. In the Ayurvedic tradition, this colder season is the vital time to replenish OJAS — your core life essence and immune reserve.

From July 1–5, join Ayurvedic practitioner and yoga teacher and therapist Helen Altman at Bodhi Forest for a 5-day Wintering Retreat. This is a grounded, practical immersion designed to move you from functional depletion to deep cellular rejuvenation.

Instead of chasing temporary relaxation, this retreat focuses on the art of longevity, returning your body to its Prakriti (its inherent, balanced nature) through time-tested practices and rhythms.

🌿 Replenishing Ojas: Targeted Ayurvedic practices, pranayama, and restorative yoga therapy structured specifically for nervous system repair and reducing inflammation.

💆 Daily Rituals: Learn the foundational guidelines for self-massage (head, face, and feet) and take home a practical protocol - along with a gift of nourishing sesame oil - to sustain your wellness at home.

🔋 Advanced Vascular Support: Access the Bemer3000 device throughout your stay to enhance microcirculation, support mitochondrial repair, and boost cellular energy.

🌲 The Environment: 4 nights immersed in nature held within a supportive circle. Nourishing food, lovingly prepared. Cleanse in the outdoor sauna, dip into the natural mountain water pool, stroll through the lush, healing forestscapes, and reflect by cosy wood fires.

Helen Altman has spent over 35 years teaching locally and internationally, weaving the threads of Ayurveda, yoga therapy, and somatic movement. Her approach is gentle, supportive, and deeply rooted in ancient teachings as a true path for lasting physiological healing.

Journey from depleted to deeply rejuvenated.

A Winter Retreat for Deep Rest & Renewal

In the quiet depth of winter, nature invites us to slow down.

In a world that rarely stops, this retreat offers you permission to do exactly that.

To sleep a little longer.
To move more slowly.
To do less.

Rather than striving or seeking to become something new, this retreat is an invitation to restore what is already within you. Through gentle, intentional practices, you’ll be supported in unwinding tension, softening the mind, and nourishing your body and being.

Expect a rhythm that honours both guided experiences and open space to all for integration, reflection, and simply being.

This Retreat Includes:

3 nourishing vegetarian meals daily
Daily Meditation & Breathwork
Restorative Yoga
Gentle Morning Yoga Flow
Fascia Release Workshop
Conscious Breathwork Journey

Cosy, fire-lit evenings
A library of books to devour
The simple rhythm of winter days

The barn stands open.

This is where the day gathers — movement, making, and conversation.

The space shifts as needed. Mats rolled out across the floor. Tables brought in for workshops and shared practice. Hands busy. People gathered.

Morning light moves through the room while work unfolds slowly and collectively. Ideas are shaped here. The rhythm changes with each retreat, shaped by the people inside it.

This is a multi-purpose working retreat environment. Grounded, practical, and lived in. A place designed for process, participation, and time spent together.

Outside, the forest holds the quieter spaces.

There is a quiet language carried by the land. 🌿

It lives in the movement of wind through fynbos, in the warmth of a cup held between your hands, in the gentle presence of the forest around you.

Days unfold slowly here. Mornings of soft light and stillness, afternoons shaped by open space and wandering, evenings settling into warmth and calm.

Simple practices arise naturally — breath, movement, rest, nourishment drawn from the earth. Each moment offering something subtle, yet deeply felt.

A place to sit, to notice, to be.
