Glen Carlou Masters of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the historic Grand Classique.

As bittersweet as it is to say goodbye to these old vines, every great vineyard evolves with time.

This week at Glen Carlou, we’ve begun removing two vineyard blocks on the road leading up to the winery. Our Pinot Noir vines have reached the end of their lifespan, making way for an exciting new chapter.

The land will now lie fallow for the next two years while the soil is restored and prepared for new Cabernet Sauvignon plantings destined for our flagship Gravel Quarry wine.

These videos show the process currently underway, with excavators carefully removing the old vines and root systems to prepare the site properly for future planting.

To new beginnings.

Masters of Chardonnay since 1985

Chardonnay was only introduced to South Africa in the late 1970s, with key vine cuttings brought in around 1980, leading to early plantings in the early 1980s.

From the outset, Glen Carlou committed to Chardonnay. In 1985, it was one of the first cultivars planted on the farm, selected for its ability to express the unique terroir of Simonsberg-Paarl.

Nearly four decades later, Chardonnay remains at the heart of our identity.

The 2026 harvest has come to a close.

On Friday, we gathered as a team to mark the moment. An afternoon of burgers and chips, shared laughter, and a quiet sense of accomplishment after weeks of early mornings and long days in the cellar.

But beyond the harvest, we honoured something far more enduring, the people who have helped shape Glen Carlou over four decades.

Gloria Zeze - 15 years
Desiree Kleinhans - 20 years
Ernest September - 20 years
Mary-Anne September - 30 years

Each was recognised by our Chairman, Wayne Pitout, and MD Johan Erasmus with a long-service award. A meaningful acknowledgement of their dedication and lasting contribution.
