ROAD UPDATE: N1 REOPENS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, HEAVY DELAYS EXPECTED THROUGH THE CAPE WINELANDS REGION

Vehicles are now permitted to travel in both directions between Worcester and Paarl but must prepare for significant traffic volume and heavy delays, aswell as lane closures, and deviations. Traffic controls and monitoring are in place.

Drivers must exercise extreme caution at all times.

- Stick to the speed limit.
- Turn headlights on.
- Wear a seatbelt.

The Western Cape Government would like to thank Sanral for the tireless work throughout the night to reopen this critical national highway.
All vehicles carrying hazardous materials must use Du Toitskloof Pass. At this stage, no hazardous material is permitted in the Huguenot Tunnel.

All announcements and decisions are subject to change at short notice. Please continue monitoring official channels for updates.

Teams from various authorities, across all spheres of government and the charity sector, are working around the clock to clear and open roads as soon as it is safe to do so.

Thank you to every single person (and their families!) who has been involved in the rescue and clean-up operations – this has been a heroic effort on every level.
