🐾 Conservation Starts with Respect

At Painted Wolf Wines, conservation is at the heart of everything we do. This Wild Wednesday, we'd like to bring attention to the importance of responsible Wild Dog den viewing and the role it plays in protecting one of Africa's most endangered carnivores.

Wild Dogs may not always show obvious signs of stress, but research has shown that disturbance around den sites can have lasting impacts on both mothers and pups. Increased pressure can lead to den relocations, reduced feeding opportunities, and lower pup survival rates.

That's why den-viewing protocols exist—not to limit the experience, but to protect it.

By keeping a respectful distance, remaining quiet, and allowing Wild Dog families the space they need, we become part of their conservation story.

The privilege of seeing Wild Dogs at a den comes with a responsibility to put their wellbeing first.

Because the greatest wildlife encounters are those that leave no trace.

International Day of Biological Diversity

Acting locally for global impact!

In the heart of South Africa’s Waterberg, the Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative (WWDI) is proving that a "whole-of-society" approach is the key to saving our species. Unlike dogs in national parks, these endangered "painted wolves" roam freely across a mosaic of private and community lands.

They're putting the IDB 2026 pillars into action:

LOOK & LEARN: Making the "invisible" Waterberg population visible by highlighting how biodiversity is a vital local economic asset.

CONNECT & ACT: Bringing farmers, lodge owners, and researchers together to move from human-wildlife conflict to coexistence.

SHARE: During denning season (June–August), their ecotourism projects allow guests to witness the packs firsthand, raising funds to support the landowners who host them.

By protecting the Waterberg’s free-roaming dogs, the WWDI aren't just saving a pack, they’re driving the global goals for a nature-positive future.
