Higher quality standard for wine judging in South-Africa

The long-established examination for wine evaluation by aspiring wine judges in South Africa has been upgraded and will henceforth be presented by the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) – a significant boost to refine and maintain judging standards in wine competitions.

This wine industry organisation’s re-instatement of the Wine Evaluation Examination under the Veritas auspices is based on a similar course developed in the 1990s by the judging pioneer Prof Joël van Wyk and later continued and refined by Charl Theron. The late Prof Van Wyk was head of the Department of Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch and Charl Theron is an eminent wine production and training specialist and former lecturer at the US.

WINE HARVEST COMMEMORATIVE EVENT HONOURS FIVE VANGUARDS OF SOUTH AFRICAN WINE

The annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event once again celebrated five role players who have paved the way forward: The Retief family of Van Loveren: 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership, Denzel Swarts: Growing Inclusivity category, Pieter Ferreira: Wine Advancement category, Charl Theron: Viti- and Viniculture category, Wilfred Fortuin: Wine Agri-Worker category.

On Thursday, 5 February 2026, the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event once again celebrated five esteemed role players in the South African wine industry who have paved the way forward by setting standards of commendable excellence. This prestigious event also blessed the season's new grape harvest while commemorating the birth of the South African wine industry 367 years ago in 1659. South Africa is unique in this regard as it is able to identify the exact origin of its wine industry by a diary entry dated 2 February 1659: "Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes."
