VERSATILE CAPE W**E MASTER NAMED BEST NEW SA W**E WRITER

The country’s Best New W**e Writer for 2026 is Janine van Zyl, a Cape W**e Master (CWM) and prominent w**e industry personality, who submitted both the overall winning article and winning blog for the New SA W**e Writer of the Year Competition – a first double triumph in the 14-year history of the competition.

Her winning article, 'Who will drink South African w**e tomorrow?', considers how the industry can connect with the next generation of w**e consumers. Her blog, 'Ice in the Chenin and other South African w**e crimes', takes a fresh look at some of the conventions around w**e drinking.

The competition’s media partner, W**eLand Media is proud to publish the winning pieces and bring these perspectives to a wider audience.

Well done to runner-up Jo Muller for her article on how the w**emaker’s role is evolving beyond the cellar door.

DEADLINE FOR BEST NEW W**E WRITER COMPETITION

Entries for the 2026 SA New W**e Writer of the Year Competition for writers 35 years old or younger closes this coming Monday 21 September.

This competition is run by the South African National W**e Show Association (SANWSA), a fully recognised w**e industry organisation, which also runs the Veritas Awards among others. It is now in its 14th year and aims to identify smart new voices in the w**e industry.

This year’s competition comprises two w**e-related categories, respectively for articles and blogs. Prize money to the value of R25 000 is at stake. The writer of the winning article will receive R15 000 with R5,000 for the runner-up position and R5 000 for the best blog.
W**eLand Media, the competition’s media partner, will publish the winning articles and blogs.

The 2026 SA New W**e Writer of the Year Competition for writers 35 years old or younger, is now open to entries – closing on Monday 21 September.

“We are excited that the competition continues to find new w**e writing talent year after year to inform and inspire w**e lovers,” says the organisation’s chairperson, Christo Pienaar. It provides an avenue for new influencers to join the conversation in this dynamic field. As an industry stakeholder, we strive to grow w**e interest and knowledge,” he adds.
