Shepherd's Field

Shepherd's Field A small regenerative farm producing healthy chicken products for local homes in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding towns.
(1)

Shepherd's Field is a small-scale regenerative farm in Port Elizabeth, run by Dave and Megan Shepherd. We currently only do chicken but we are looking forward to also producing pasture raised eggs, organically grown vegetables, and forest raised pork. We are doing all we can to ensure the wellbeing of our animals, ethically caring for them in as natural environment as possible. We are also very co

ncerned for the land. Sustainability is not enough - we are looking to build our soils. Therefore, our processes are chosen for their ability to grow biodiversity in the soil, enhance water holding capacity and maximize carbon sequestration. Our products are hormone and medication free, contain no preservatives, MSG or additives.

At Shepherds Field we raise pasture-raised chickens the way we believe they should be raised — outdoors on pasture, moved regularly, and fed a no-GMO diet. The result? Eggs and chicken that are as responsibly produced and nutritionally rich as they can be.

We’re not alone in caring deeply about how food is raised. Across South Africa there are farmers doing exceptional work:
If you’re looking for outstanding pasture-raised chicken and eggs, you can support farms like Bramleigh Farm and Farmer Eddie .

If pork is what you’re after, we highly recommend Louis Ka-Ri Plaas Boerdery.

And for premium grass-fed, grass-finished beef, take a look at Langside Meats and Zuney Wagyu.

When you buy from us, you’re not just getting premier-quality chicken
eggs, pork and beef — you’re backing a way of farming that prioritises stewardship, animal welfare, and integrity. You’re helping us keep doing what we do.

Thank you for supporting ethical farming in South Africa.

Most people don’t realise this, but the farm is either healing the land… or slowly exhausting it.

There’s no neutral ground.
Regenerative farming starts with a simple conviction: the land is alive, and it responds to how we treat it.

When soil is covered, not bare.
When animals are moved, not confined.
When roots are living in the ground year-round.

When microbes, insects, plants, animals, and people are seen as one system — not separate parts.

Something remarkable happens.
The soil darkens.
Water soaks in instead of running off.
Plants grow stronger without being forced.
Animals behave like animals again.
And the food tastes like it came from somewhere real.

Regenerative farming isn’t nostalgia.
It isn’t a label.
It isn’t marketing language.
It’s humility — working with creation instead of trying to dominate it.

It asks better questions:
What builds life here?
What restores instead of extracts?
What will still be growing long after we’re gone?

Good farming doesn’t begin with chemicals or clever branding.
It begins with attention. With patience. With restraint.

And maybe that’s why it resonates so deeply — because the same principles that heal soil tend to heal people too.

If you’ve visited a farm that’s doing this well, or you’re trying it yourself, I’d love to hear what you’ve seen.

What changed first — the land, the animals, or you?

While I do think that some Free-range eggs are what you think they are, the ones sold commercially are simply not. Please Google the farm or farmer. Here are the best I know who realise hens properly. Please add to the list if you know others. Bramleigh Farm Farmer Eddie Shepherd's Field
