The theme for 2026 is "From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere," highlighting the use of science, data, and collective action to create safer food systems from farm to table.

This year's theme asked us to do something uncomfortable: look honestly at the cost of unsafe food before we talk about fixing it. From burden to solutions - safe food everywhere.

The figures World Health Organization released ahead of 7 June are sobering. Around 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths every year. Almost 1 in 9 people on earth fall ill from contaminated food. And the burden does not fall evenly - Africa and South-East Asia carry the heaviest load, and children under five, just 9% of the world's population, account for nearly a third of all cases. A burden comparable to tuberculosis, HIV and malaria.

Yet largely preventable.

That last word is where our work begins. Behind every statistic is a decision someone made, or did not make, somewhere along the chain: a temperature not checked, a verification step skipped, a corrective action left open. Food safety is built one control at a time.
