Winter gazing vs Summer grazing! In winter your animals must be able to hold condition and not lose weight so adaptability is critical. Select cows that are well adapted to your conditions. If you are in sour veld you will want a smaller framed animal than sweat veld. Choose replacement heifers from well adapted mothers.

Burning grass is a tool that must be used correctly. After burning, it is important that you wait for the grass to grow to about 15-18cm. This will give you the highest yield (kg per ha) for that area. This will prevent overgrazing which results in unpalatable species taking over and your best grasses dying out. Have a plan for graze, rest, rotation. You should every 3-4 years rest each area the whole summer allowing your palatable species to seed. Your grass is the asset you either make or lose money with. It is irresponsible to burn and not manage. We grow beef but soil and grass is our resource. 😀😀

We always want to select cows that look good but we should choose on fertility. Cows are the foundation of any herd, a cow that calves every year makes you money. She doesn’t look like much but she has given me 6 calves
