It’s Friday, which means it’s time for another trip down memory lane with the undisputed king of the kerk bazaar…

👑 THE JAFFEL 👑

Also known as a Knypkoek if you own a FAK subscription and enjoy correcting people’s pronunciation.

📜 A highly questionable history lesson

Nobody knows exactly where the jaffel came from. Historians have theories. Oumas have stronger theories.

Some say it was invented when a farmer accidentally sat on a sandwich. Others believe it arrived in South Africa on a ship carrying condensed milk and church raffle prizes.

What we do know is that everyone had an ouma there.

And every family still owns her jaffel iron, because nobody has ever actually bought one. They simply appear in your kitchen one day after being passed down through generations, usually wrapped in newspaper and smelling faintly of curry mince.

🔥 How we do it:

Two buttered slices of sourdough go into that trusty old jaffel iron.

We fill it until it develops a respectable little bulge.

Clamp it shut.

Bake it over the flame until golden brown, crispy, and approximately 8 million degrees inside.
