🐔🥚 POOR LAYER VS. GOOD LAYER 🥚🐔

How To Identify a Productive Hen at a Glance

Not all hens in your pen are giving you profit.
A simple physical check can tell you which bird is working — and which one is just eating feed.

❌ 1️⃣ POOR LAYER (Low or No Egg Production)

🔹 Small, pale, cold, and floppy comb & wattles
→ Poor blood circulation and low hormonal activity.

🔹 Dull, sleepy, or shrunken eyes
→ Low vitality and weak production energy.

🔹 Tight, hard, or underdeveloped abdomen
→ Little space for egg formation.

🔹 Dry vent (small and tight)
→ Not actively laying.

🔹 Often overweight or too thin
→ Poor feed conversion into eggs.

📌 These birds consume feed but give little or no returns.

✅ 2️⃣ GOOD LAYER (High Egg Producer)

🔸 Large, bright red, warm, and upright comb & wattles
→ Strong blood flow and active reproductive system.

🔸 Bright, sharp, and alert eyes
→ Healthy and energetic bird.

🔸 Full, soft, and flexible abdomen
→ Enough room for egg development.

🔸 Large, moist, and oval vent
→ Actively laying eggs.

🔸 Strong appetite with good body balance
→ Efficient feed-to-egg conversion.

📌 These are the hens putting money in your pocket.

💡 FARMER TIP

Check your layers early in the morning when they are calm.
Separate poor layers if necessary to reduce feed waste and improve overall flock performance.

Healthy layers mean steady egg baskets.
Know your birds. Manage wisely. Increase profit 🥚💰

The DIY Hanging Chicken Feeder & Waterer: A Simple Backyard Hack That Actually Works

This image shows one of the smartest low-cost chicken-keeping ideas you can make at home: a DIY hanging feeder and waterer built using recycled plastic bottles and shallow trays.
It’s simple, cheap, and surprisingly effective — especially for small backyard flocks.
Instead of buying expensive poultry equipment, this design uses everyday materials to create a clean feeding station that keeps food and water accessible while reducing waste.

What This Setup Is
The system in the image includes:
Two large plastic bottles (one filled with grain, one filled with water)
Two shallow plastic trays (repurposed containers)
A simple wooden T-shaped stand
Hooks and hangers holding the bottles above the trays
One side works as a feeder, and the other works as a water dispenser.

How It Works
The Feeder Side
The grain bottle is inverted so the feed drops into the tray.
As chickens eat from the tray, more feed falls down automatically.
This creates a basic self-feeding system.

The Water Side
The water bottle works the same way.
It’s flipped upside down and placed so that water stays in the tray at a controlled level.
When the water level drops, air enters the bottle and releases more water.
This is a classic gravity waterer design.

Why Hanging It Is the Best Part
A lot of DIY feeders sit directly on the ground, which causes problems:
dirt gets kicked into the feed
chickens scratch bedding into the water
the bowls tip over easily
rodents are attracted to spilled grain
By hanging the bottles off the ground, this setup:
✅ keeps things cleaner
✅ reduces waste
✅ stops tipping
✅ makes feeding easier

Why This Is Great for Backyard Chicken Owners
This type of feeder/waterer is ideal if you:
have a small flock (2–10 hens)
want a cheap solution
need something fast to build
want to recycle materials
don’t want to constantly refill bowls
It’s especially helpful for people who work during the day and want ch
