'n Ram beïnvloed een generasie. 'n Ooi beïnvloed almal daarna. Elke lamoes, elke kilogram gespeen, elke rand se inkomste begin by haar — sy is nie net 'n dier in die kraal nie, sy is die fabriek agter jou hele teelprogram.

A ram influences one generation. A ewe influences all of them. Every lamb crop, every kilogram weaned, every rand of income starts with her — she's not just an animal in the pen, she's the factory behind your entire breeding programme.

🐑 What Makes a Great Stud Ewe? Part 2: Fertility

If there's one trait we select hardest for at Ruswater, it's this one. Fertility isn't a nice-to-have — it's the difference between a ewe that pays for herself and one that doesn't.

Dormers were bred for it. Lambing percentages of 150%+ are the norm for the breed, not the exception, and the breed society backs that up with real teeth: under Dormer SA's own minimum standards, a ewe must lamb — or be confirmed in lamb — by 24 months of age, or she's culled from the flock. No excuses, no exceptions.

That's the standard we hold our own ewes to before they ever go under the hammer.

Fertility is a trait that compounds — a fertile ewe gives you more lambs, sooner, for longer. It's the single biggest lever in your flock's profitability.

🐑 Wat maak 'n goeie stoetooi? Deel 2: Vrugbaarheid

As daar een eienskap is waarvoor ons by Ruswater die hardste selekteer, is dit hierdie een. Vrugbaarheid is nie 'n bonus nie — dit is die verskil tussen 'n ooi wat vir haarself betaal en een wat net 'n uitgawe is.

Dormers is juis hiervoor geteel. Lampersentasies van 150%+ is die norm, nie die uitsondering nie. Ons eie minimum standaarde vereis dat 'n ooi voor 24 maande ouderdom lam — of bevestig dragtig wees — anders word sy uit die kudde uitgeskakel. Geen verskonings, geen uitsonderings nie.

Dit is die standaard waaraan ons ons eie ooie hou voordat hulle ooit onder die hamer kom.

Vrugbaarheid is 'n eienskap wat oorerflik is — 'n vrugbare ooi gee jou meer lammers meer gereeld en vir langer. Dit is die grootste hefboom in jou kudde se winsgewendheid.

🐑 Wat maak 'n goeie stoetooi? Deel 1: Die nie-onderhandelbaar

Voordat ons oor stamboom of prys praat, moet 'n stoetooi eers die basiese toets deurstaan. Geen teelwaarde maak saak as sy nie kondisie kan behou, kan loop om te wei, of 'n lam kan grootmaak nie.

Hier is wat ons eerste nagaan, elke keer:

🦷 Tande & bek — Sy kan nie produseer as sy nie kan eet nie. 'n Korrekte byt en gesonde agtertande hou kondisie op deur dragtigheid en laktasie.

🦵 Pote & bene — Sterk bene,, goeie kote en stewige kloue. Sy moet kan loop om te wei — en moet seisoene lank hou, nie net een nie.

🍼 Uier — Nie-onderhandelbaar. Twee gesonde, goed geplaasde, eweredige spene. Geen knoppe nie. Dit is wat 'n sterk paar lammers grootmaak, jaar na jaar.

📏 Raamwerk — Goeie lengte, diepte en breedte deur die lyf en agterkwart, wat haar die vermoë gee om meerlinge te dra.

🐑 What Makes a Great Stud Ewe? Part 1: The Non-Negotiables

Before we even talk about pedigree or price, a stud ewe has to pass the basics. No amount of breeding value matters if she can't hold condition, walk to graze, or rear a lamb.

Here's what we check first, every time:

🦷 Teeth & mouth — She can't produce if she can't eat. A correct bite and sound back teeth keep condition on through pregnancy and lactation.

🦵 Feet & legs — Strong bone, correctly placed on all four corners, good pasterns, tight feet. She needs to walk to graze — and needs to last for seasons, not just one.

🍼 Udder — Non-negotiable. Two sound, well-placed, evenly sized teats. No lumps, no damage. This is what rears a strong pair of lambs, year after year.

📏 Frame — Good length, depth and width through the body and hindquarter, giving her the capacity to carry multiples and milk well once they're on the ground.
