🐝 Look what happens when hundreds of little bodies work together!

When we harvest honey, we place a piece of cling wrap over the honey to help collect and remove impurities. Rather than throwing it away, we put it into an empty hive so the bees can clean up and reclaim any remaining honey.

Today, a swarm moved into this hive… and they wasted NO time! πŸ˜‚πŸ

Working together, they quickly started cleaning out the hive and removing this huge piece of cling wrap. What looks like an impossible job for one tiny bee becomes surprisingly easy when the whole colony works together.

It really is amazing to watch the organisation, cooperation and sheer determination of a bee colony. πŸ’›

Tiny bodies. Incredible teamwork. One colony. 🐝🍯

We couldn’t leave for home today… because apparently our headlight looked like the perfect place to move in! πŸ˜‚πŸ

The bees had other plans and decided our vehicle was their new home. So before we could head off, we had to carefully catch them and move them into a hive. 🐝🏑

They’ll be safely rehomed somewhere out in the field where they can settle in and get back to doing what bees do best. 🌻🍯

And honestly… clearly they know who their keeper is! 🀣🀣🐝

Another day in the life of a beekeeper β€” you never quite know where you’ll find your next swarm!

🐝 Suiting up properly isn’t optional when you work with African bees!

I’ve been getting a LOT of stings on my wrists lately πŸ˜… My sleeve has been riding up slightly, leaving a tiny gap where there’s only the glove layer β€” and those clever little girls have been finding it! πŸπŸ˜‚

So I’m adding an extra layer: fingerless gloves underneath my beekeeping gloves to give my wrists some much-needed protection.

I also make sure my pant legs go OVER my boots so there’s no easy entrance for bees to crawl up inside. πŸ‘–πŸ₯ΎπŸ

Protective gear is there for a reason! African honey bees can be extremely defensive and aggressive, especially when their colony feels threatened.

Suit up, seal the gaps, and respect the bees. 🐝❀️

🐝🌿 DID YOU KNOW BEES MAKE PROPOLIS?

Look closely at what these little workers are doing! They’re busy working with propolis β€” one of the most fascinating substances found inside a beehive. πŸƒπŸ

Propolis is a sticky, resinous material that bees collect from trees, buds and other plants. They bring those plant resins back to the hive and combine them with beeswax and their own secretions to create this incredible natural substance.

So what do bees actually use it for?

🏑 Hive maintenance: Bees use propolis to seal cracks, gaps and unwanted openings in the hive.

πŸ›‘οΈ Protection: Propolis helps create a protected environment inside the colony. Its naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds are part of what makes propolis so interesting.

🐝 A bee-made defence system: Bees can even use propolis to coat areas of the hive and help keep their home hygienic.

And humans have been fascinated by propolis for thousands of years. 🌿

Propolis contains naturally occurring compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids and other polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. It has traditionally been used for things such as supporting oral and throat health, soothing minor skin irritations and as a natural ingredient in balms, tinctures, sprays and other preparations.

Research into propolis has also explored its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and wound-supporting properties, which is why it has become such an interesting natural product.

But perhaps the most amazing thing is that the bees made it first! πŸπŸ’›

They collect what nature provides, transform it inside the hive and put it to work protecting their colony.

Bees don't just make honey. 🍯
They make wax, propolis, royal jelly and so much more β€” each with an important role in the incredible world of the hive. 🌿🐝

🐝🌸 SWARM SEASON IS HERE! 🌸🐝

With the start of spring, we’re seeing the bees become active β€” and that means swarming season is here!

A swarm can look intimidating, but swarming bees are often less defensive because they’re focused on finding their new home. However, they are still wild bees, so always keep a safe distance and never try to handle a swarm yourself.

This little swarm had chosen a rather unexpected spot β€” a slide at a nursery/kindergarten! πŸ›πŸ

We needed to act quickly to keep the children safe, while also making sure the bees were given a second chance. Using a BeeVac, our professional beekeeper carefully collected the swarm so they could be safely relocated and rehomed. 🐝🏑

You may notice our beekeeper isn’t wearing a protective suit. He is an experienced professional who knows how to work with swarming bees. This is NOT something to attempt yourself.

If you find a swarm, please call a professional beekeeper rather than spraying, poisoning or destroying the bees. Ethical removal allows us to protect the colony and give them a new home. πŸŒΏπŸ’›

🐝 Protect the bees. Protect the people. Relocate β€” don’t exterminate.

🐝 SWARM SEASON IS IN FULL SWING! 🌿🍯

Our bee-catching hives have been BUSY lately! 🐝🐝🐝 We’re currently catching lots of beautiful swarms β€” and every one is a little reminder of just how incredible bees are.

When we set up our catching hives, we carefully choose ideal locations and add old honeycomb to them. Why? Because to a swarm, that familiar smell says: β€œThis could be home.” 🏑🐝

Once the bees settle in and establish themselves, we give them a new home in a large, healthy hive and move them to a safe location out in the veld, where they can forage naturally and continue doing what bees do best. 🌸🌳

We’re not just catching swarms β€” we’re giving them a second chance to thrive. ❀️

Every swarm we save is another colony protected, another group of pollinators kept alive, and another little piece of nature given a safe place to call home.

🐝 Save the swarm. Save the bees. Protect our pollinators.
