The significance of Pickled Fish
Pickled fish can be traced back to the Cape Malay cuisine, brought together by the slave trade in the 17th century. Pickling fish was used to preserve fresh fish during the early days of the Cape colony. It was only much later that pickled fish became a tradition over Easter.

I get asked this question quite often during Easter. Why do we eat fish on Good Friday? The custom derives from the Roman Catholic practice of not eating warm-blooded animals on Fridays, as a mark of respect and penance for Jesus' death.

Pickled fish is traditionally served with hot cross buns or fresh bread. Eating pickled fish in vinegar on Good Friday is symbolic of Jesus being offered vinegar to drink at his crucifixion. This is also why it is commonly served with hot cross buns.

That's our history lesson for today, folks, lol!

We hope you are enjoying the yummy pickled fish prepared for you by .

Growing up in Cape Town, one of my fondest memories of waking up on a Sunday morning is when my mom would hand me an empty Tupperware and I would take a walk to the aunty who made koeksisters. A walk I know would be very rewarding. The aunty would fill the Tupperware and we would have warm, delicious koeksisters for breakfast! This is a tradition that took place in almost every family's home every Sunday without fail.

From Kaaps Met Luv would like to start this very tradition in your home. We will be selling these delicious, spicy Cape Malay koeksisters per dozen. C'mon, reminisce with us and place your order!

Delivery can be arranged at your own cost.
