The family originated from the region of Dordrecht in the Netherlands, where their ancestors owned a castle next to the Merwede River. Today, the family lives next to a river remarkably similar to that on their ancestral grounds. The blue band on the bottle capsule symbolizes the river, while the front label recalls the ancestral crest. Although the Van der Merwe winemaking tradition dates back to

the 1800s the approach to current operations are innovative and dynamic. Wines made from selected vineyard blocks capture the essence of this magical terroir. Our wines are characterized by rich fruit and subtle spice flavours. The red wines are complex yet have rounded tannins that enhance drinkability, this is what makes the wines so special.

There is a very large yellow sign right before the Nekkies bridge, noting that the road is closed. The road is only closed for access to the town. You can still access the wine farms and businesses on this side of Rawsonville.

We know there is an enormous yellow sign just before Nekkies bridge warning you that the road is closed.

Though the road is closed to Rawsonville's town, we promise you that the road to Huis Te Merwede is open. Our amazing team is there every day, and we are yearning some good company after the storm's damage.

The aftermath of the recent storm has had a heartbreaking effect on many in the Breede River region. Unfortunately, Merwida Vineyards and Huis Te Merwede were among those severely affected.

Ten of our farm workers' homes were affected, while approximately fifteen hectares of vineyards were washed away. Along with that, there's been a dramatic decline in visitor traffic and sales due to road closures, and it's had a devastating impact on our farm and hospitality business.

Like many in our valley, we are now facing the long road of rebuilding: Restoring vineyards and infrastructure while also supporting the families whose livelihoods depend on Merwida.

During times like these, the support of our customers and community means more than we can express. While access to the farm remains challenging due to the bridge closure, there is still a very meaningful way you can support us: By purchasing Merwida wines through our online store.
