Silverthorn Crazy Diamond — 2021

Brut Nature Cap Classique
85% Chardonnay · 15% Pinot Noir

We produce a very limited release of this Brut Nature Cap Classique exclusively for the Cape W**emakers Guild.

The Chardonnay component of this prestige cuvée was selected from a vineyard planted in 1991 on ancient shale and limestone soils dating back some 400 million years. With its high limestone content, this distinctive terroir has a natural affinity with Chardonnay and bears similarities to the celebrated soils of Ch*****ne.

Both the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were 100% barrel fermented and matured in 500-litre French oak barrels, adding complexity and texture to the final w**e. The Cap Classique then spent 40 months on the lees before disgorgement.

It is unusual to have an opportunity to taste the full line-up of the auction selection for the annual Cape W**emakers’ Guild sale, and even more unusual to be permitted to taste them blind.

Producers have a right to be concerned about the impact of an adverse score on their sales prospects, though it is equally true that those whose reputations have longevity and weight can easily counter less-than-sumptuous score/notes.

Either way, Michael Fridjhon was very happy to again engage with the w**es without the impact of the brand to influence his opinion.
