The Glen Avon Mill in its present situation was built in 1862, evidenced by the wheel being dated 1861. This mill would have been built by Robert Hart Jnr since his father would have been in his early 80s by this time. The machinery and equipment were made at Leeds in England, shipped to Algoa Bay, transported by bullock wagon to Glen Avon via the old Zuurberg Pass and assembled on the spot.

In ancient times, old mapmakers supposedly drew sea monsters or dragons on uncharted parts of the world. The Latin phrase "hic sunt dracones" (here be dragons) also sometimes appeared on some historical maps. This served as a literal or symbolic warning to sailors that no reliable information existed beyond that point, so they traveled at their own risk.

At Glen Avon, we can also say "here be dragons". Only very small ones, though.

In addition to the three self-guided trails on Glen Avon, visitors can hike along the river or the road to the Glen Avon waterfall.

This waterfall, the scale of which is only appreciated from close up, has the reputation of being one of the highest drops of water on private land.

It’s at least a 10 km hike that takes you through indigenous forest into a riverine-forested valley where sneezewood and cabbage trees grow. The waterfall and the kloof have been declared the Glen Avon Falls Natural Heritage Site (No 71).

A refreshing dip in the pool below the falls awaits you at your destination.

Pecan Cottage is a cosy cottage that is set amongst large pecan trees and lush rolling pastures. It’s a spacious 3 bedroomed, six-person cottage that has a very cosy fireplace for chilly winter evenings. It’s got a double-bedded room, and two twin rooms, with the one twin room having an ensuite bathroom.

* Three bedrooms sleeping six.
* 2 bathrooms.
* An open plan living room.
* A fully equipped kitchen – microwave, kettle, toaster and large fridge.
* All rooms have panel heaters for winter, and fans are available on request for summer.
* There’s a sheltered stoep with a built-in braai.
* Wi-Fi
*Tea and Coffee, sugar, farm milk and home-made rusks are provided.

This isn't a recent video, but it shows the river just below the Glen Avon Waterfall flowing strongly. The difference between wet and dry times is drastic, but no matter which, the valley as you approach the waterfall is always striking.
